Our Team

The Occupational Health and Safety North Atlantic Operations Team provides leadership and technical support in terms of long-term prevention strategies for our Ontario Operations. In doing so the team enables the operations to meet business objectives and achieve outstanding outcomes focused on prioritizing, planning, and delivering on performance improvement areas.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Superintendent Occupational Health to join our Ontario Operations Team in Sudbury. This is a permanent position.

The role holder will work closely with operations to ensure adequate resources are constantly available to prevent occupational health risks and will set a high technical competency for members within the department. This position will also be responsible for defining goals and monitoring indicators; will set standards to meet local and company requirements; will represent the company in interactions with internal and external stakeholders when appropriate and will establish systematic approach to address main critical issues for Occupational Health teams.

Accountabilities for this position include:

  • Direct support and supervision for the Sudbury Occupational Health Analysts and technical support and guidance to Port Colborne Hygienists.
  • Planning and support of the development of annual sampling plans, objectives, and routines to ensure compliance with government regulations and company standards with an adequate use of resources.
  • Output from OH team; responsible for maximizing the value of the resources for the business and ensure plans are adhered to.
  • Sustainability Health, Safety, Environment (HSE) \xe2\x80\x93 Demonstrating safe and healthy supporting the Division in reducing exposures to health hazards in the workplace by providing guidance and practical solutions to control/eliminate exposures to physical, chemical, and biological risks.
  • Management System \xe2\x80\x93 Working with the business to develop and or revise, implement and maintain updated standards to ensure requirements from regulations and company are met.
  • Ensure data entered in company\xe2\x80\x99s software is up to date and focusing on identifying trends and solutions by establishing and monitoring key indicators.
  • Continuous integration with operational leadership, union, third-parties, medical providers, and hygienists from other sites and from the business to learn from each other and to ensure alignment, understanding and engagement.
  • Working in a team, providing guidance and technical support to unionized team members, supporting their personal and professional development.
  • Applying Risk Assessment principles and techniques to eliminate Occupational Health Concerns
  • Tracking Key Performance Indicators required for Occupational Health and include these on regular reports.
  • Management and responsibility for appropriating OH contracts and ensuring budgets are adhered to.
About You
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist or similar
Experience:
  • 8 years minimum related work experience
Skills
  • Strong leadership and communication skills to lead a team.
  • Able to develop short and long-term team strategies.
  • Develop and implement programs to protect worker health, including appropriate training.
  • Evaluate business\' data and similar operations (e.g., monitoring and surveillance data, injury and illness data, incident reports and health and safety programs) against internal history as well as national or industry standards, to recognize and define risks.
  • Conduct business\' research or operation research to recognize risks and recommend controls.
  • Interpret survey data and assess risk using established analytical techniques to prioritize corrective actions.
  • Communicate identified risk control measures (e.g., recommend engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment controls) by identifying critical capabilities and implementation strategies to manage risk.
  • Design and implement controls as appropriate (e.g., organize committees, plan, conduct or provide training; maintain records; collect data; collaborate with contractors; select equipment; and manage respirator, confined space entry, lockout/tagout, and other safety and health) to manage risk.
  • Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills in chemistry, biology, anatomy, physiology, physics, mathematics, and statistics.
  • Interpret the various physical properties of substances to determine exposure control options for a variety of chemicals.
  • Interpret the results of air sampling calculations and apply them to the sampling program (e.g. to establish proper sampling strategies and storage conditions).
