Our Team

The North Atlantic Projects and Services Team plans and safely executes sustaining and operating projects across surface and underground operations.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Superintendent Safety and Health to join our North Atlantic Projects and Services team based out of Sudbury. This is a permanent position.

The primary role of the incumbent will be to provide leadership and guidance to teams in Ontario, Manitoba and Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay and Long Harbour to Project Safety Supervisors and contractors regarding technical support, training staff, coordination, development and implementation of the North Atlantic Projects & Services Team\'s Health, Safety, Environment and Risk Management System. They will also monitor that Project Teams and contractors are complying to the HSE requirements of the projects, by auditing performance vs the HSE Plan for compliance, effectiveness of safety programs, policies and procedures in the field.

The HSE Superintendent will support divisional program development and the upkeep of current programs required under federal/provincial legislation, including the occupational health and safety management systems, and also support corporate programs such as the Safe Work Program, and the Management of Change program. This role is also responsible for communicating, planning and executing work related to any regulatory changes. The HSE Superintendent will also help with the analysis and analytics of on our safety performance and put forward actions to address deficiencies.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the project team and other stakeholders with interpretation of Vale Systems and rules, assist in communication with Plant HSE resources.
  • Field visits to site to ensure compliance to Regulations, Vale standards, and the Project HSE program.
  • Ensure coordination, field implementation and management of the specific project(s) HSE Execution Plan for Construction and Commissioning, including related project commitments.
  • Monitor the field assurance audits for key risk controls to assess effectiveness.
  • Ensure proper tracking of responses, and flagging/challenging where responses are backlogged, or inappropriate
  • Coaching of individuals in the project within the principles and values behind the HomeSafe philosophy and project values.
  • Regular interaction and advice to project personnel and workplace sites
  • Monitor the Projects MLTSD Correspondence and track project responses. Flag concerns with content or timeliness to Project Superintendent owners team.
  • Review Health programs of the project team vs legislation for compliance, as well as follow-up to workplace concerns / exceedances
  • Ensure updating and modification of safety related documents and tools for stakeholders as required
  • Audit project compliance and readiness on emergency preparedness (training, knowledge and drills).
  • In conjunction with project management and/or project contractors, coordinate thorough investigation of all incidents and actively participate in higher risk safety incidents and coordinate audits to eliminate conditions that have potential negative environmental impacts to the project.
  • Conduct unscheduled and scheduled inspections of work areas in conjunction with project management, contractors and employees as appropriate.
About You

Education:
  • Post graduate completion of a Health and Safety program or Health and Safety certification
Experience:
  • Minimum of 3 - 5 years of experience in construction and underground mining Projects
Skills:
  • Occupational Health and Safety Act and Construction Regulations Training/knowledge;
  • Mining experience and underground common core training along with REG 854 training/knowledge operation
