Overview:
Summer Student - Fort Smith

To assist plant operations staff in maintaining a safe, efficient and reliable supply of electricity to the community.
Responsibilities:
• Always work safely, adhere to all aspects of the NTPC Health & Safety and Environmental programs, comply with all rules & regulations, and continually practice health & safety while performing any duties.
• Responsible to assist a trained Operator and/or Tradesperson in the operation both hydro sites and diesel gensets; meeting the system requirements by synchronization, coordinating loads between units, take units on and off from the system bus manually or using automation such as a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC).
• Cleans and maintains buildings and grounds by performing duties such as, but not limited to: wiping down and cleaning equipment, sweeping and washing floors, ensuring entrances and exits are clear of snow and debris, painting equipment and buildings, storing combustible materials appropriately.
• Performs and assists work orders on generating units; plant auxiliary equipment, substation equipment, safety inspections, powerplant and yard housekeeping as per preventative and corrective maintenance scheduled by the Manager along with opening and closing the assigned work orders in the NTPC electronic Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
• Assists a trained Operator and/or Tradesperson in monitoring and operation hydro sites and diesel plants, auxiliary equipment as per NTPC's operational requirements and manufacturer's recommendations. Logs all necessary readings and prepares equipment for standby condition.
• Effectively communicates the overall operation, availability, issues of the equipment to other operators, cross shifts and system control operators.
• Assists in system restoration following a system disturbance under the direction of the Control Centre Operator and NTPC management.
• Other dutires as required.



• Work involves exposure to unusual elements such as dirt, dust, fumes, extreme temperatures, humidity, darkness, and noise.
• Work involves physical risks such as working around mechanical, chemical and electrical hazards which can be dangerous if not handled correctly.
• Must be able to meet the physical tasks of the job (e.g. standing, walking, wearing a respirator, climbing, pushing, pulling, lifting, working from heights & confined spaces etc.).
• Must be able to see, hear and properly communicate with others.
• Personal protective equipment will be provided and must be worn.


Qualifications:
Qualifications: • Current High School or post-secondary student. Must have completed a minimum of grade 10 and be age 16 or over.
+ Proof of recent enrollment/experience in the SNAP program •OR •
+ proof of enrollment in a relevant trade school for the 2025-26 school year •OR •
+ previous operational student employment with NTPC (during the school year, previous summer jobs, etc.) •OR •
+ good academic standing in relevant courses (e.g. shop class, technical education, etc.)
• Steel-toed boots are required.
• Manual skills to complete all basic tasks and repairs.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both in written and verbal forms, and work with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work with other personnel and the public.
• Computer skills an asset.
• Full Class 5 Driver's license would be an asset.
