Building and maintaining our provincial infrastructure is no small job.




The Building Services Group at the Department of Public Works (PW) supports Nova Scotia's 2,400 buildings and infrastructure assets across a wide range of clients. We maintain and support various government buildings and assets, including museums, core buildings and office buildings, correctional centres, and justice centres.




Without our Building Services staff's proactive measures, equipment issues or failures could lead to an interruption of government services provided.

As the Engineering Student, you will gain practical experience and receive training and mentorship from highly qualified Engineering professionals by working on our design projects and energy audits for our buildings. This is the perfect opportunity to jump start your career, gain an understanding of how mechanical design or electrical design works for buildings and also work with our energy professionals to understand how are we reducing our energy consumption and our GHG emissions and watch your contributions come to life as your design gets actually built.




We will provide you with all the required technical and protective equipment you need, and as a bonus, you get to keep the boots we provide you when your work term ends.




Primary Accountabilities
----------------------------



As a Student in the Asset Management team, you will work alongside experienced professionals to support energy efficiency initiatives and gain hands-on experience in building energy management. Your responsibilities will include:




• Reviewing utility bills to analyze energy consumption trends and identify potential cost-saving opportunities.
• Assisting in feasibility studies for energy conservation measures and renewable energy projects.
• Supporting the development and updates of Operations & Maintenance (O&M) manuals to improve building efficiency and sustainability.
• Conducting basic energy audits to assess building performance and recommend improvements.
• Collaborating with team members on special projects aimed at reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Qualifications and Experience
---------------------------------



You are a Bachelor of Engineering student, enrolled in a Mechanical or related discipline, with a strong interest in energy management and building efficiency.



The ideal candidate demonstrates:




• A keen interest in energy conservation, building operations, and sustainability.
• Strong analytical skills and proficiency in reviewing data, including utility bills and energy reports.
• Familiarity with energy modeling tools, building automation systems, or RETScreen Expert (an asset but not required).
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills to support reporting and stakeholder engagement.
• This opportunity will provide valuable exposure to real-world energy management practices and contribute to making buildings more efficient and sustainable.






The following are considered assets:




• Familiarity with mechanical design for heating and cooling systems for buildings, or familiarity with electrical design for power and lighting systems for buildings.
• Familiarity with energy reduction strategies for buildings.
• Familiarity with energy modelling or energy management software.






We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions
----------------------



• Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day.
• Typically located in a comfortable office environment.
• Much of the time is spent in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about.
• Regularly reads and interprets multiple sources of information, regular requirement to type, read and work on a computer.
• May experience pressure with deadlines and need for accuracy.
• May require occasional visits to work sites or provincial offices.

This opportunity will start approximately April 28, 2025 with an end date of August 29, 2025.




There is one (1) position available in Halifax.




This opportunity could potentially be used for a Co-op placement. The successful candidate will be required to discuss with the Co-op office.




Travel throughout your assigned area is occasionally required; as such, you must have a valid driver's license and access to a reliable motor vehicle. Please include a copy of your driver's abstract with your application.




Pay Grade: HOURLY


Salary Range: $18.22 - $29.69 Hourly
