Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Services, the Summer Student, Community Climate Action Intern position will support the Sustainability Project Coordinator with climate-related community outreach and education. They will support the community goals of the City's Climate Action Plan by developing and delivering external outreach activities and initiatives such as Provincial Day of Action on Litter, Migratory Bird Day, Backyard BioBlitz and Clean Air Day. Other opportunities will include supporting the City at local outreach events.
This job will create a meaningful experience by introducing the candidate to climate change mitigation and adaptation within a municipality. It will also provide the youth with the ability to use their ingenuity to help publicize climate action externally while gaining experience in communications and outreach. The youth will also have the opportunity to meet and network with local conservation and climate action organizations as well as gain hands-on experience with event coordination.
Job duties would include, but are not exclusive to:
• Providing relevant content for the Eco Update e-newsletter.
• Hosting and attending booths, events, workshops and in-person and virtual outreach as required.
• Developing an hour-long Eco Day-themed activity for the Summer Playground Program.
• Assisting the City's Youth for Climate Action Working Group with their educational pollinator garden project.
• Attending Bird Friendly Cornwall meetings and providing outreach assistance for the group and for Migratory Bird Day.
• Networking with local non-profits and community groups to create joint projects and outreach events.
• Creating educational resources and content for various audiences.
• Online research.
• Participate in the following projects: EV Chargers, Tree Inventory and Home Energy Loan Program.
• To be a representative of the City of Cornwall and always maintain outstanding public relations skills and professional image.
• All other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
• Full-time day student at a recognized secondary or post-secondary institution and be returning to full time attendance the fall of 2025.
• Enrolled in Educational background or work or volunteer experience in conservation, environmental sciences, geography, communications, event planning, graphic design, outreach, or similar field.
• Basic knowledge of climate change mitigation and adaptation.
• Public speaking skills or experience presenting to or working with the public (customer service).
Asset Qualifications:
• Bilingualism
• Creative writing and graphic design.
• Experience using Canva and/or Publisher.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills
• Administration and research experience.
If selected for this role, you will need to provide:
• Must obtain and maintain a satisfactory CRJMC (Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check), at the candidate's own expense.
• Successful reference check (two work-related references, with a minimum of one being a direct supervisor)
• Verification of school status
All Summer Students must be Full-time day students at a recognized secondary or post-secondary institution and be returning to full time attendance in the fall of 2025.
