About us Established in 2015, New Era Ag Research is a small business in Swan River, Manitoba. We are the only contract research organization in the northern cropping zone of Manitoba. New Era Ag provides research services in the areas of product and variety evaluations, offered in field-scale trials and small plots. Website: https://neweraagtech.com/research/ Hiring: We are seeking highly energetic and motivated individuals to fill the role of Summer Research Assistant at New Era Ag in Swan River, MB from May to August (flexible dates). Spend your summer outdoors building experience in the agriculture research field through plot research projects. Learn about crops, insects, weeds, and equipment in a hands-on and practical way that will further your career in ag. Summer staff are trusted team members and closely assist agronomists and research technicians with a broad range of projects for multiple clients. Location: New Era Ag Research Office located at 520 3rd Avenue South Swan River, Manitoba. Research plots located across the Rm of Swan Valley West and RM of Minitonas-Bowsman (work vehicles provided for travel to fields from theoffice). Start/End Date: Seasonally flexible with tentative dates being May-August. Hours: Full-time hours with overtime (minimum 40 hours/week) Duties: Work with fellow agronomists and technicians to assist clients and offer agronomic advice. Duties included but are not limited to: - Assist field crew with seeding plots: Measuring and staking plots, handling and treating seed, and operating equipment as required - Asses plots throughout the growing season: Plant stand counts, vigor assessments, weed counts, root and tissue sampling, etc. - Follow treatment protocols, and apply various treatments: Spraying PGRs, herbicides, fungicides, etc. - Plot maintenance: Mowing and tilling as required, weather monitoring and documentation - Harvest: Assist in collecting harvest data (by hand or equipment) - Crop scouting: Checking fields on a weekly basis to monitor all growth stages as well as the presence and type of weeds, insects, and disease. - Tissue testing: Proper collection and handling of plant tissues for nutrient analysis - Soil testing: Proper soil testing in spring, summer and, fall to determine available soil nutrients - Insect trap monitoring: Weekly monitoring of varying insect traps throughout the season to determine pest population within the Valley Requirements: - Ability to perform rigorous physical fieldwork under a variety of weather conditions, lift 50lb, as well as crouch, stand, and stretch for extended periods of time. - Must have practical skills, time management, interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral skills. - Able to work independently, or within a dynamic team environment - Strong work ethic, enthusiasm for the outdoors - Applicant must have basic computer skills and be detailed oriented Other Conditions: - Must have a valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license - Able to work flexible full-time hours on short notice (mornings, evenings, weekends, and overtime). Training: Training will be provided in all areas as the season progresses and the duties change. Job Types: Full-time, Seasonal
Contract length: 4 months Salary: $17.00-$22.00 per hour Schedule:
