Summer Environment & Summer Climate Assistants Location: Hybrid: Work form home (3-4 days/week), and office work (1-2 days/week) at the M\xc3\xa9tis Nation of Alberta Provincial Head Office (Edmonton). Some travel and/or field work may be required. Closing Date: March 26, 2023 Position Status: Full time (40 hours per week), Summer Student (May \xe2\x80\x93 August 2023) The Organization Since its inception in 1928, the M\xc3\xa9tis Nation of Alberta (MNA) has governed the M\xc3\xa9tis within Alberta. The MNA is led by a democratically elected Provincial Council, comprised of a Provincial President, a Vice-President, and six regional Presidents and Vice-Presidents. This Council works toward the mandate of the MNA, supporting practices of transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness for M\xc3\xa9tis Albertans in governments\xe2\x80\x99 policy and decision-making processes. The Opportunity The Provincial Office of the M\xc3\xa9tis Nation of Alberta (MNA) is recruiting for various summer student positions within the Environment and Climate Change department. These are summer term positions with an end date of September 2, 2023. The successful candidates will provide support to their corresponding portfolios and must have the ability to produce professional documents and reports, possess strong technical skills, and have knowledge of issues facing M\xc3\xa9tis people. Key Responsibilities \xe2\x80\x93 Summer Energy and Sustainability Project Assistant Reporting to the Energy and Sustainability Manager, the candidate will:
  • Support ongoing efforts for energy monitoring at MNA facilities, including monitoring energy use and renewable/solar energy production.
  • Calculate and report equivalent greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and emissions reduction for MNA facilities using pertinent GHG quantification protocols.
  • Compile technical information and generate reports to report back to the MNA, affiliates and MNA Citizens.
  • Assist with Environment and Climate Change initiatives, including grant applications, delivery of projects and reporting.
Candidate will have post-secondary education in Environmental Sciences, Alternative/Renewable Energy, Engineering, Technology, or a related field. Candidate will have an interest in energy efficiency, energy management, alternative energy, and/or greenhouse gas emissions quantification. 1-2 years related work, volunteer experience, or related coursework is an asset. Key Responsibilities \xe2\x80\x93 Summer Engagement Assistant Reporting to the Engagement and Policy Manager, the candidate will:
  • Assist with environment and climate change citizen engagements, including development of print and digital content and coordinating the delivery of engagements.
  • Compile technical information and generate reports to inform the MNA, MNA affiliates and MNA Citizens.
  • Contribute to development and implementation of environment and sustainability awareness tools and resources for MNA Citizens.
  • Assist with Environment and Climate Change department initiatives, including grant applications, delivery of projects, and reporting.
  • Identify and implement sustainability measures at MNA facilities, such as waste reduction efforts.
Candidate will have post-secondary education in Indigenous Studies, Community Engagement, Community Development, Sociology, Anthropology, Environmental Sciences, Renewable/Alternative Energy, or related field. Candidate will have an interest in citizen engagement, public participation, environment and sustainability. 1-2 years related work, volunteer experience, or related coursework is an asset. Key Responsibilities \xe2\x80\x93 Summer Environment Field Assistant Reporting to the Manager of Environment, the candidate will:
  • Support environmental monitoring field work, specifically plant related monitoring and identification.
  • Assist with data entry and analysis from environmental monitoring work.
  • Support the planning and implementation of Environment and Climate Change engagements and community events, in person or online.
  • Assist with Environment and Climate Change initiatives, including grant applications, delivery of projects, and reporting.
Candidate will have post-secondary education in Environmental Science, Conservation Science, Biology, Environmental Studies, or a related field. Experience and knowledge of Alberta plant vegetation and identification would be an asset. ArcGIS experience is an asset; however, not required. 1-2 years related work, volunteer experience, or related coursework is an asset.   • Strong Microsoft Office Suite (word, Excel, PowerPoint) skills.
  • Strong Adobe Acrobat Skills.

  • Students must be returning to post-secondary education full-time in the Fall 2023 or Winter 2023, or be a recent graduate (graduated in 2022 or 2023).
  • Able to work flexible schedule including days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Able to support field work (may include travel).
  • Valid Class 5 Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License is an asset.
