Start Date: May 8 - June 17, 2023 (part time) Counselor Training: June 19 \xe2\x80\x93 23, 2023
Camps: June 26 \xe2\x80\x93 Aug 18, 2023 Purpose of the Position:
Provide a safe and unique experience for all camp participants. Clearly communicate instructions for the optimal development of an activity, while successfully imparting knowledge. This position is directly involved in the operational development and implementation of the camp activities. Major Functions:
  • Plan, develop and organize the programming and activities for Sima Explorer Camp with a focus on outdoor exploration. Build on past programming and develop new ideas to enhance the camp experience
  • Ensure that program delivery and safety standards are maintained
  • Set-up the indoor and outdoor spaces with the necessary equipment
  • Lead the camp counsellors and junior counsellors in the daily activities
  • Supervise a group of children (ages 6-12) in a variety of activities including games, crafts, learning activities, and lunch
  • Organize and oversee recreational and outdoor activities including canoeing, hiking, swimming, and forest games
  • Lead outdoor educational activities including plant identification, wilderness survival, and orienteering
  • Instruct camp participants in safe practices regarding wildlife, canoeing and other outdoor programming
  • Maintain the safety of the camp participants (ages 6-12)
  • Provide emergency or first aid assistance when required
  • Perform morning set-up, and afternoon clean up duties as assigned
  • Follow the guidelines and safety rules as outlined in the Counselor Manual
  • Be responsible for the physical, mental, and emotional needs of all children in your care
  • Act as a prudent parent in the absence of the child\'s parent
  • Attend all mandatory training sessions
  • Ensure camper inclusion within the camp community
  • For the three Rangers Camps (ages 9-12): supervise camp participants for an overnight camp-out at Mt Sima on the last day of camp
Skills required:
  • Effective communication skills
  • Organized, reliable and self-sufficient
  • Confident supervising staff and leading groups of children
  • Passionate about planning and developing children\xe2\x80\x99s outdoor activities
  • Capable of following established schedules and times, and being flexible to unexpected changes
  • Positive attitude and energetic personality
Required certifications:
  • Valid Remote First Aid or Wilderness First Aid certification (can be obtained this Spring)
  • Valid Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Must complete on hill safety training, including bear safety training, first aid and evacuation training
