About the Position

This key position leads the development and execution of SLS Centre\xe2\x80\x99s camp programs for children and youth. SLS Centre offers week-long camps in the summer (July and August) and day camps throughout the school year (September to June) during school breaks and PD Days. The Camp Coordinators are responsible for coordinating, developing, implementing, facilitating, and evaluating exceptional camp programs that meet the needs of our community. This position oversees the safe and consistent operation of camp programs, working closely and collaboratively with other SLS Centre departments (i.e., Programs, Guest Services, and Health and Safety).

Seasonal, Hourly (possibility of continuing year-round part-time)
Summer Term: Casual hours for planning (May-June), up to 40 hours/week from June 5 \xe2\x80\x93 Sept 5, 2023


Specific responsibilities:

  • Coordinate, develop, implement, facilitate, and evaluate camp programming for children ages 4-12 years. During summer camps, the three Camp Coordinators will each be assigned to develop and direct camps for a specific age group (4-5 years, 6-8 years, or 8-12 years).
  • Ensure camp programming and activities promote physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development which respect the diversity of children and their families.
  • Oversee and provide day-to-day direction to assigned camp staff (i.e., Camp Leaders and Play Facilitators) and volunteers.
  • Assist the Programs Supervisor with hiring, training, professional development, feedback, mentorship, and overall management of camp staff and volunteers, including conducting formal performance reviews.
  • Assist the Programs Supervisor with scheduling Camp Leaders (i.e., finding shift coverage for camp leaders who are absent or sick) ensuring camps are appropriately staffed to deliver effective programming.
  • Contributes to the development, communication, and maintenance of camp guidelines and manuals.
  • Ensure the physical and emotional camp environment is safe for children.
  • Develop and demonstrate child guidance techniques, encouraging children to take responsibility for their actions and to develop problem-solving skills.
  • Provide effective customer service and communication internally (to camp staff and other stakeholders in Programs, Guest Services, and Marketing) and externally (to parents/customers).
  • Responsible for all camp facility bookings and setup, takedown, storage, and maintenance of all camp-related equipment, supplies, or materials.
  • Purchase camp-related equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Recommend, develop, and implement improvements.
  • Enforce SLS Centre rules, follows safe work practices and procedures, and liaise with Guest Services, Duty Managers, Operations/Custodial, and other groups as needed.
  • Be always ready to engage in hands-on play!



Qualifications:
  • 1-2 years of relevant leadership/supervisory experience (formal or informal).
  • 1-2 years of experience developing and facilitating relevant sport & rec camp programming.
  • Experience directing staff and ensuring staff & customer safety.
  • Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification is required. We may hire a candidate who does not have this qualification yet if they plan to achieve it prior to the end of June 2022 (at their own time and expense).
  • Sufficient availability between June 5 - Sept 5 to support operational needs.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and comfort with technology/software is required.
  • Personal skills required include: leadership and the ability to coach and develop others, customer service, organization and a proactive approach, energetic and enthusiastic while maintaining a balance of professionalism.
  • Must have a strong command of the English language, verbal and written.
  • Able to provide a clear RCMP Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Able to work in a physical environment: long periods of standing/walking, bending, squatting, kneeling, and twisting, pushing/pulling objects, and reaching overhead. Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.
