Specific Accountabilities:
Working closely with a curriculum coach, the SME will play a central role in shaping both the academic and practical direction of the Powerline Technician program. Responsibilities include:
Program, Curriculum, and Lab Development
Program and Course Input: Provide expert insight into industry standards, utility-sector expectations, essential trade competencies, and safety practices.
Course Outline Development: Create accurate and comprehensive course outlines that reflect current industry practices and required learning outcomes.
Syllabus / Course Plan Design: Develop structured course plans outlining weekly topics, practical components, assessments, and required resources.
Hands-On Lab & Pole Yard Development
Practical Training Design: Provide expert recommendations for hands-on skill development and field-based learning activities.
Pole Yard Planning: Advise on the setup, layout, equipment, and safety considerations for a college pole yard, ensuring alignment with real-world PLT training standards.
Equipment & Tools Input: Identify necessary tools, climbing gear, hardware, and training equipment required to support practical skill development.
Assessment & Evaluation
Assessment Development: Create meaningful assessments that measure applied skills, safety knowledge, troubleshooting ability, and overall trade competency.
Rubric Creation: Develop clear, fair, competency-based rubrics aligned with learning outcomes and industry expectations.
Optional Future Teaching Opportunity
Candidates may be considered for part-time teaching once the program launches.
About the Position:
This is a part-time temporary support staff role reporting to the Dean, Applied Science, Engineering Technology & Trades (ASETT) making $34.77 / HR.
This is a meaningful opportunity to shape a new Powerline Technician program from the ground up--ensuring the curriculum, hands-on labs, and pole yard reflect the realities of the trade. Your expertise will directly influence the quality, safety, and readiness of future powerline technicians entering Ontario's energy sector.
Lambton College is seeking an experienced Powerline Technician (PLT) industry expert to support the development of a new Powerline Technician program within the Faculty of Applied Science, Engineering Technology & Trades. This role is ideal for a working professional who is passionate about the trade and interested in shaping the next generation of powerline technicians.
This is a flexible, project-based position that can be completed while you maintain your full-time employment. Training, coaching, and standardized curriculum templates will be provided.
Qualifications:
Required:
Extensive industry experience as a Powerline Technician, Powerline Maintainer, Lineworker, or related role
Strong understanding of:
Utility operations
Electrical distribution systems
Field safety protocols
Climbing, rigging, troubleshooting, and emergency response practices
Preferred:
Experience training or mentoring apprentices, crew members, or new hires
Involvement in developing training materials, procedures, or safety documentation
Experience with curriculum development (asset, not required)
Additional Skills (Assets):
Ability to translate hands-on field expertise into structured learning materials
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Comfort with collaborative project work
Genuine interest in supporting the next generation of trades professionals
