Job Description

Ancillary Services is looking for Residence Life Advisors (RLAs) for the 2025-2026 Academic Year. RLAs act as peer-supporters, advisors, activity planners, administrators, and educators to maintain and develop our community standards. RLAs must work together with their fellow students, RLAs, Senior RLAs, department staff, facilities management, security services, food services, and other university members to help create an educational environment conducive to both living and learning.Individuals selected as RLAs are those who demonstrate leadership, maturity, dependability, and involvement in their residence community, as well as sensitivity and concern for other residents. They must be committed to their own personal growth, taking care to budget personal time for study, work, relaxation, and continuous learning. RLAs must have a commitment, which extends beyond specific job responsibilities. Once chosen, the RLAs are provided with additional training and support services, which enhance their effectiveness in their job responsibilities.Please note: * To be considered for the position, applicants are required to attend one of the following information sessions taking place in Andrew Hall 142

• Session 1: Sunday February 9th, 2025 at 6:00pm
• Session 2: Monday February 10th, 2025 at 6:00pm
• Session 3: Tuesday February 11th, 2025 at 6:00pm
• If selected for an interview - the interview date will be Saturday March 1st, afternoon.
• RLAs are required to attend training starting August 18th, 2025 and must remain in residence at least 48 hours after the end of exams (subject to change at the discretion of Residence Management). They are also required to return from holiday break at least 48 hours prior to the regular check-in for residence students.

RESPONSIBILITIES:Community Support

• Assisting and supporting students on roommate conflicts, academic, personal, and social matters
• Educating residents about residence community standards to ensure the safety and security of all residents
• RLAs are required to be available to support and aid their residents and their community outside of desk duty hours. Strong boundaries are important while also maintaining positive relationships with their residents and RLA teams

Community Engagement

• Create door decs on time, and as directed for both semesters keeping them up to date as changes occur to the community list
• Planning and changing the boards monthly on time and as directed
• Planning, advertising and running active events for residents at least once a month that are in line with your community's likes and interests
• Creating a monthly passive event to educate, inform, engage, and share resources with residents in your community
• RLAs will be required to meet with each member of their community at least twice a year to check-in and ensure the resident feels supported and welcomed in their community. Details of these intentional conversations will be covered during training

Residence Operations

• Becoming familiar with residence related software, including eRezLife
• Completing room assessments, assisting with public relations, ensuring maintenance is complete, keeping residents informed, acting as supervisors for safety exercises, working as liaisons, and assisting with other administrative duties as required
• Participating in move-in and move-out for each semester. This can include checking in students, showing students to their rooms, traffic control, supporting parents, guardians, and family members with move-in questions, room checks, and more
• RLAs will have an on-duty schedule. RLAs will file duty reports, community development logs, Incident Reports and Student of Concern Reports as covered in training.
• RLAs must maintain confidentiality. This includes information from any student documents, any incidents that may transpire, any sign-in sheet information, etc
• Attending and participating in professional development sessions and all staff meetings. In addition to checking and, if needed, responding to communications (emails or chats) daily for information and updates

Duty ShiftsRLAs will be working in-service shifts a certain number of weeknights and weekends each semester (Note - This includes working some holidays or long weekends)Duty shifts will include communicating to residents which RLA is on duty, maintaining a duty log and doing building rounds as directed, being under no intoxicating substances while on duty, being respectful, talking with residents around the building, ensuring guests or people that do not live in residence are with the resident that signed them in or if they are alone to ensure they leave the building, ensuring the doors and buildings are locked at the correct hours, and informing team leaders of any issues that may ariseDuring on-call rotations, RLAs must be readily available in case anyone is in need of assistance or calls the phone during overnight hours (8pm-8am)Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI)

• RLAs will collaborate with the larger University EDI teams to align residence programming and education with the larger organizational goals
• RLAs will work to understand the complexity of leading and educating in a diverse community and action that learning in appropriate ways
• RLAs will work with members of the residence community to highlight areas of opportunity and concern as this relates to EDI and accessibility

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be a current UPEI student
• Satisfactory academic standing (minimum 65% average). (Each applicant must submit a copy of their unofficial degree audit with the application package. This information is kept confidently by the Selection Committee)
• Residence living experience (at least one year and preferably at UPEI)
• Good rapport with fellow residence students, and the ability to serve as a positive role model
• Sound knowledge of UPEI, campus services, residence life program, and different student activities
• Available to participate in training starting August 18th, 2025
• Valid Standard First-Aid certificate or willing to obtain it prior to August 18th, 2025
