Position Summary
The new project focuses on the creation of a typology of Arab policing across 22 countries. This study aims to categorize and analyze the diverse structures, practices, and roles of police forces in the Arab world, providing a comprehensive framework for understanding the complexities of law enforcement in the region. By identifying key patterns and variations in policing systems, the project seeks to highlight the socio-political and cultural factors influencing law enforcement practices in these countries.
In the first phase of the study, we will collect extensive data on the organizational structures, legal frameworks, and operational priorities of police forces in each of the 22 countries. This will involve analyzing historical records, policy documents, and existing literature to capture the evolution and current state of policing in the Arab world.
In the second phase, we will conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses to develop a typology that distinguishes between different models of policing in the region. This typology will take into account factors such as the level of centralization, the role of community policing, the influence of political regimes, and the integration of technology in law enforcement.
The project aims to contribute to the global understanding of policing by providing a nuanced view of Arab law enforcement, addressing both shared characteristics and unique national practices. This typology will serve as a foundational tool for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners working on law enforcement and public safety in the Arab world.
Position Summary:
Assist with all aspects of the research project including, but not limited to:
- Assist with the development and refinement of a literature review to identify key studies and frameworks relevant to policing in the Arab world;
- Assist with the creation of a SSHRC profile to align the project objectives with funding requirements and showcase the project's significance;

- Assist in the development and dissemination of a research instrument tailored to capturing data on organizational structures, operational priorities, and socio-political influences on policing in the Arab world;
- Assist in data cleaning and analysis to ensure accuracy and reliability in the findings related to the typology of Arab policing;
- Assist in note-taking, report writing, and the final write-up of an academic journal article that synthesizes the project's findings and contributes to the broader understanding of policing in the Arab world.
