Working within institutional strategies and policies, the student recruitment team is the first point of contact to provide clear advice about how to choose, apply for, accept, and enhance best-fit academic programs, as well as empowering inadmissible applicants to identify suitable academic pathways to actualize their goals.
Reporting to the Manager, National Student Recruitment, the Student Recruitment Specialist, National is responsible for the implementation, delivery, and evaluation of undergraduate student recruitment activities across Canada, with a continued focus on supporting applicants with previous post-secondary coursework. In addition to transfer student support, this role includes responsibilities that contribute to national outreach efforts and team development.
There are moderate physical demands placed on the Student Recruitment Specialist, National, through carrying necessary equipment and materials for student recruitment activities. This position works closely and effectively with other campus administrators, requiring a strong knowledge of University of Calgary policies, programs, services, and departments.
This position serves as a mentor to junior co-op students and new national student recruitment advisors, providing guidance and support to foster professional development and team cohesion.
This position works 35 hours per week and is part of the AUPE bargaining unit. Some travel and occasional evening and weekend work is required, particularly before and during major student recruitment events. Although the focus of this role is national outreach, international travel may be required.
Summary of Key Responsibilities

Recruitment and Engagement:
Plans and targets outreach activities to high schools and communities across Canada, with a particular emphasis on ensuring all Alberta high schools are supported and engaged.
Provides accurate, up-to-date information about the University of Calgary and its undergraduate programs to prospective students, families, and school counsellors.
Advises prospective students on admissions criteria, program options, transfer credit, and academic pathways, including those with previous post-secondary experience.
Organizes and delivers on- and off-campus, as well as online, informational and promotional sessions tailored to prospective transfer students and other national audiences.
Mentors junior co-op students and new national student recruitment advisors, offering informal guidance and support.
Collaborates with the Student Recruitment Specialist, Calgary during peak periods to support regional outreach.
Identifies gaps in outreach coverage and incorporates missing schools or underserved regions into recruitment planning.
Works within a pre-established budget and framework to execute recruitment activities with measurable objectives.
Supports equity, diversity, and inclusion through targeted outreach and inclusive recruitment practices.
Provides feedback to RO Marketing and Communications on promotional materials to ensure clarity and relevance for diverse audiences.
Connects equity-seeking applicants to appropriate student services and financial supports.
Conducts market research and surveys to monitor trends and inform recruitment strategy.
Supports communication planning for recruitment activities, including invitations, reminders, and follow-up surveys.
Responds to inquiries from prospective students, families, counsellors, and community groups via email and meetings.
Provides coverage for campus tours during peak periods or holidays and supports post-tour inquiries.
Maintains detailed knowledge of University of Calgary programs, services, and enrolment policies.
Stays informed on promising practices for engaging underrepresented communities and researches their unique educational needs.
Works with the Assistant Registrar, Student Recruitment and Applicant Relations to analyze recruitment effectiveness and identify barriers, particularly for transfer students.
Qualifications / Requirements:
An undergraduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution is required.
1-3 years of related experience working in a recruitment or admission office is required.
Strong scheduling, organizational, and time management skills.
Ability to manage change and demonstrate success in leading change initiatives.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated experience conducting recruitment presentations to a large and diverse audience.
Demonstrated proficiency with technology with a specific focus on virtual fair platforms, online presentation tools, and CRM tools such as Slate.
Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse groups of people.
Demonstrated intercultural competency.
Ability to deal tactfully and decisively with sensitive issues while maintaining confidentiality.
Knowledge of the Transfer Alberta system is considered an asset.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, colleagues, school administrators, officials and representatives.
Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, high pressure, team-based environment and meet deadlines.
Strong computer skills including demonstrates proficiency with Microsoft Office products are required to produce plans, reports, text, and materials.
Knowledge of PeopleSoft would be an asset.
Willing to travel across Canada and work evenings and weekends as required and work independently with minimal supervision.
A valid Class 5 drivers license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
