Job Summary:Olas (palm leaf manuscripts) Hidden Hands digitization project (1 SSMU position)
The Student Project Assistant for the Olas Hidden Hands digitization project, supervised by the Digitization administrator, supports the digitization of 125 olas, comprising palm leaves and paper, bound with a single string. Their role involves ensuring the completeness and accuracy of digitized materials. This SSHRC project is coordinated from Rare Books and Special Collections by Liaison Librarian Lauren Williams with the objective of conserving, digitizing and cataloguing the olas. The assistant's responsibilities include operating various scanning equipment, conducting quality control checks on scanned items, handling rare materials, data entry, and maintaining project spreadsheets. The goal is to complete this project by the end of Winter 2026.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to clearly transmit and receive information. Reliability and flexibility to meet working hours.
Attention to detail, the ability to work independently and part of a team.
Effective communication and writing skills. Fluency in English and French languages is desired. McGill University is an English-language university where day-to-day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level # (3) on a scale of 0-4 Other languages an asset.
