The Occupational Therapy Extern works in collaboration with and under the direct and/or indirect supervision of an appointed regulated healthcare professional and under the mentorship of a Clinical Extern Coordinator to provide quality and safe patient care. OT Clinical externs can also shadow occupational therapists across various departments tailored to their interests, offering a well-rounded experience.
Under supervision, you'll perform essential patient care duties, contribute to accurate clinical documentation, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals in a team-based environment. This contract role includes comprehensive orientation, ongoing support, and the chance to work in a patient- and family-centered environment. You'll practice safe, evidence-based care, document patient data, assist with assessments, and advocate for culturally competent, respectful care. As an Occupational Therapy Student Extern, you are required to work minimum of 1 shift per 3-week period, and can work to a maximum of 75 hours bi-weekly.
Education
Applicants must be enrolled in any year of study in a training program accredited by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (COAT)
Must hold a current BLS Certificate
Qualifications
Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and other relevant legislation
Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
Knowledge of Emergency Codes
Ability to work in a job that requires lifting, considerable walking, and standing, bending, pushing and pulling of equipment
Demonstrated knowledge of infection control practices
Demonstrated ability to foster caring and trusting relationships with patients and families in an effort to support patient focused care
Demonstrates a positive attitude and the willingness to work effectively in a team
Demonstrated commitment to on-going learning and professional development
Ability to maintain a consistent level of productivity and efficiency
Ability to ask questions and seek out assistance when unsure of how to proceed with a task that is unfamiliar
Ability to perform responsibilities in a courteous manner
Compliance with confidentiality requirements under the MGH Privacy Policy
Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
Patient service-oriented, with the ability to effectively work in a diverse and inclusive environment
Good work and attendance record is required.
