Structural Engineer (P.Eng.) - Full-Time Opportunity at Niche Engineering Corp.
Niche Engineering Corp.
is a dynamic Canadian engineering firm specializing in structural design for commercial and multi-family building projects. We are seeking a qualified
Structural Engineer (P.Eng.)
with at least
5 years
of post-licensure experience in structural design to join our team. The ideal candidate will play a key role in designing safe, efficient building structures and ensuring projects meet all code requirements and quality standards. This full-time role offers an opportunity to contribute to high-profile developments in a collaborative and innovative environment.
Key Responsibilities
Structural Design & Analysis:
Perform detailed structural design and analysis for
multi-family and commercial building projects
, including calculations for steel, concrete, and wood structural systems. Ensure that designs are safe, efficient, and compliant with relevant building codes and standards (e.g. National Building Code of Canada).
Project Oversight:
Manage the structural engineering aspects of projects from concept through completion, making sure all work meets applicable codes, regulations, and quality standards. This includes reviewing designs for compliance with
Canadian codes
(e.g. CSA standards) and Niche Engineering's internal quality guidelines.
Collaboration:
Work closely with architects, other engineers, and construction teams to develop integrated design solutions. Coordinate structural requirements with architectural and MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) disciplines to ensure compatibility and adherence to project objectives.
Documentation:
Prepare comprehensive engineering documentation including structural drawings, specification documents, calculation packages, and technical reports. Oversee the production of construction documents and provide clear instructions/details for drafting technicians using Revit or AutoCAD.
Site Support & Quality Assurance:
Conduct site visits and structural inspections as needed to verify that construction adheres to the engineered design. Identify and resolve on-site structural issues, and provide guidance to contractors for any required field modifications. Ensure all work maintains the highest standards of safety and structural integrity.
Continuous Improvement:
Stay up-to-date with industry developments, emerging technologies, and best practices in structural engineering. Incorporate innovative design approaches (e.g. new materials or techniques) where appropriate to improve efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. Mentor junior engineers or E.I.Ts (Engineers-in-Training) by sharing knowledge and promoting a culture of engineering excellence.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering (or related field) from an accredited institution. A Master's degree in Structural Engineering would be an asset (optional).
Professional Designation:
Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
in a Canadian province (Alberta registration with APEGA, or equivalent)
required
. Must be in good standing and qualified to stamp structural engineering work products.
Experience:
Minimum
5 years
of relevant experience in structural design of buildings
as a licensed engineer
. Prior experience designing
multifamily residential and commercial structures
is required, with a portfolio of completed projects. Experience should include analysis and design of structural steel and reinforced concrete systems (experience with wood and masonry is also valuable).
Technical Knowledge:
Strong understanding of structural engineering principles and design methodologies.
Excellent knowledge of the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC)
and relevant CSA design standards for structural materials (e.g. concrete, steel, wood, masonry) is expected. Familiarity with Alberta Building Code and other provincial regulations is beneficial.
Software Skills:
Proficient in structural analysis/design software (e.g., SAP2000, ETABS, or similar);
experience with SAFI Structural Engineering Software is a plus
. Skilled in using
Revit for structural modeling and drafting
and conversant with AutoCAD. Experience with other modeling or analysis tools (e.g., RISA-3D, Tekla, STAAD) will be considered an asset.
Communication & Teamwork:
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment. Proven ability to coordinate with various stakeholders (clients, contractors, consultants) and to clearly convey technical information to non-technical audiences.
Problem-Solving:
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Must be detail-oriented and capable of making sound engineering judgments to troubleshoot design challenges or on-site issues.
Professionalism:
Demonstrated commitment to
safety, ethics, and continual learning
. Must adhere to high professional standards in line with engineering best practices and regulatory codes of conduct. Active participation in professional development (courses, seminars, APEGA/engineer society activities) is encouraged.
Preferred Skills and Assets
Software Mastery
: Advanced proficiency in structural analysis software; direct experience with SAFI for structural calculations is highly preferred. Familiarity with BIM workflows and Autodesk Revit for creating and reviewing structural models/drawings.
Project Experience
: Background in projects that incorporate sustainable design, high-performance building systems (e.g. solar, geothermal), or innovative construction techniques. Experience working on projects in Western Canada and understanding of local conditions/practices can be an asset.
Leadership & Mentorship
: Ability to lead a small team or mentor junior engineers and technologists. Candidates who have taken on a lead engineer or project engineering role on structural projects will be viewed favorably.
Additional Certifications
: Possession of additional relevant certifications is a plus (e.g., LEED Accredited Professional, PMP for project management, CSA W47.1/W59 welding certification knowledge for steel design, etc.). While not required, such credentials demonstrate a broader skill set and commitment to the field
