Strategic Analyst

Job Description

This position provides strategic analysis to support long-term commercial strategy and fleet decision making. The incumbent provides analytics and support to the Waterfront tactical team to assist them in ensuring that the Tactical employment of the fleet is optimized by minimizing the cost of delivering Methanol for Methanex while maximizing Waterfront's profitability.

  • Responsible for strategic (long term) analytics to support fleet and long term strategy decisions made by the Commercial Director and President
  • Responsible for producing statistics and developing KPIs which help support decision making within the Commercial department with regards to vessel deployment, customer strategy and fleet management
  • Produce effective KPI reports (Commercial quarterly, Monthly rate forecast, Daily update) which are used by Waterfront Management, GMLT, SMPT and global marketing and logistics groups
  • Develop a strong understanding of the cost & profit drivers crucial to optimizing the use of the Waterfront fleet
  • Manage the forward vessel schedule and planning with the Commercial Planners
  • Produce the 3 year forward budget, in collaboration with the Commercial Director and Commercial team
  • In conjunction with the Commercial Director, develop, adjust and update Waterfront's Customer and Fleet strategy Plan (Quarterly basis)
  • In conjunction with the Commercial Planners, develop, adjust and update Waterfront's tactical vessel employment strategy plan (Monthly basis)
  • Produce analytics as required for strategic Supply Chain and Corporate development projects
  • Perform coverage for Methanol Chartering group during periods of travel and vacation (Development opportunity)
  • Commercial claims management (freight)
  • Adhere to the principals of RC, by participating in the Waterfront Management System and supporting the RC and Quality Supervisor in RC and ISO initiatives
Position Responsibilities

Strategic Analysis
  • Produce analytics required by the President/Commercial Director to plan future fleet composition
  • With the Commercial Director, develop and update Commercial strategy document which outlines Waterfront's long term strategy regarding 1) Fleet composition 2) Time Charter size 3) and Vessel composition (TC/Spot/COA)
  • Produce analytics when required for Global Supply Chain and Corporate Development projects
Reporting and Analytics
  • Support Commercial planning team with ad hoc analysis on vessel allocation decision making, with a focus on minimizing Methanol delivery costs while maximizing Waterfront profit
  • Develop analytics to evaluate the financial performance of past voyages which the Commercial team will use to adjust forward strategy
  • Develop, adjust and update Waterfront's tactical vessel employment strategy plan
  • Produce quarterly Commercial department KPI report
  • Produce monthly rate forecast for GMLT & Global M&L Team
Commercial Claims Management & Coverage
  • Calculate and negotiate freight claims with 3rd party customers
  • Communicate and coordinate Methanol voyage planning with the Operations groups, Global Supply Chain and Methanex Marketing regions
  • Preform coverage for Methanol Chartering group during periods of travel and vacation (Development opportunity)
WFS Management System (RC/ISO) Continuous Improvement
  • Work with Commercial Director to ensure we deal with owners who follow the principal of RC, and the RC clause be in all Charter Parties
  • Give full support to Marine Assurance team
  • Ensure ISO/RC is followed in day to day dealings
  • Actively participate in Waterfront Management System and support the Manager, Marine Assurance & Responsible Care in developing a system to improve group participation and involvement
Communication
  • Maintain a strong relationship with the Operations Director and Operations group
  • Provide Methanex with rate and cost estimates for various supply scenarios and communicate all potential risks.
Information System Development
  • Participate in Veson/Imos ERP enhancement projects and initiatives
  • Continue to find innovative opportunities to streamline processes and utilize IT solutions to enhance the effectiveness of the Commercial department
Position Qualifications

Education and/or Professional Designation
  • A university degree in an associated discipline (i.e. accounting, engineering, business administration, operations)
  • Minimum of 1-5 years' experience in the shipping and logistics industry
Experience & Skills
  • Must have strong analytical ability
  • Must be able to work independently without constant guidance
  • Must be able to work constructively as part of a team
  • Must develop an excellent understanding of how the shipping market works (including regulatory), the players, and closely follow and read market changes and trends
  • Relevant IT experience (nice to have)
  • Should have a desired to develop and learn within the tanker/shipping industry
  • Strong interpersonal skill with the ability develop and maintain relationships easily
  • Disciplined analytical approach and solid understanding of financial theory
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and oral
  • Willingness to communicate via the telephone when something is urgent or important
  • Strong computer skills in desktop applications (Excel, Word, MS Project, Access)
