About Our Opportunity

The Water Branch of Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change has an exciting opportunity for a 2-year term position to carry out work identified in the Climate Plan to improve municipal stormwater infrastructure and planning. The Climate Plan represents the government\xe2\x80\x99s commitment to develop, co-ordinate and lead actions that promote sustainable prosperity for all Nova Scotians.

Reporting to the Manager, Water Resources Management Unit, the Stormwater Engineer will work with a cross-departmental team to apply the principles of science and engineering and public policy analysis to develop stormwater management planning requirements for municipalities across Nova Scotia.

In this role, you will be expected to use critical thinking, judgment and initiative to guide major regulatory processes with scientifically sound information. You will demonstrate initiative in increasing the awareness of the complex business, environmental, and scientific issues faced in the area of stormwater management, as well as provide leadership and strategic thinking in the development and implementation of program strategies and improvements.

Primary Accountabilities

As the Stormwater Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Creating a made-in-Nova Scotia framework for stormwater management plans to improve municipal stormwater infrastructure across the province with consideration of climate change.
  • Develop guidelines, educational resources and other program support tools, and provide technical engineering support to staff across provincial departments as it relates to stormwater planning and design.
  • You will work with staff within the Department of Environment and Climate Change and at the Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing to design and implement a program to support the development of municipal stormwater management plans.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will posses a Bachelor of Engineering plus six (6) years of engineering experience in a related field (such as water resources or storm drainage design) and be licensed to practice as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia (Engineers Nova Scotia). Advanced degrees and training will be considered an asset. Training and / or experience within a land use planning environment will also be considered assets.

In addition to the above, you also possess the following:

Knowledge

- Familiarity with the provincial Storm Drainage Policy
- Integrated stormwater management approaches and planning
- Stormwater /storm drainage design and construction
- Municipal and provincial civil and land development permitting processes
- Methods and practices to include climate adaption into engineering design
- Asset management and infrastructure planning processes
- Microsoft Suite of software including Word, Excel and Powerpoint

Experience
  • Project management working in cross-disciplinary design teams
  • Experience in leading and facilitating stakeholder consultation
  • Preparing a range of documentation including: reporting, meeting materials, and milestone updates in digital and presentation formats
  • Experience working in a municipal setting
  • Experience in policy development

Please note, this is expected to be a Term status position with an end date of March 31, 2025; however, the position status (\xe2\x80\x9cterm\xe2\x80\x9d, \xe2\x80\x9ctemporary\xe2\x80\x9d or \xe2\x80\x9ccasual\xe2\x80\x9d) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate. This position is based in Halifax. This position offers an option for flexible working.

Pay Grade: PR 18

Salary Range: $3,215.50 - $3,781.51 Bi-Weekly
