Job Description

Position Summary:



The primary objective of the Store Manager is to assist the Operations Manager in overseeing and managing the day-to-day operations of the Co-op in Hay River, NT.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Store Manager plays a pivotal role in supporting the Operations Manager in the general operations of the Foodstore and the Gas Bar. The Store Manager will be responsible for managing the Foodstore and providing direction, and leadership to all department managers within the Foodstore including the Front End, Grocery Department, Produce Department, Meat Department, Deli Department, Bakery Department and Gas Bar.

The Store Manager will play a hands-on role in building strong customer relationships based on the principles of professional, friendly and efficient customer service. It is expected that the Store Manager will act as the Operations Manager when the Operations Manager is away.



Who you'll work with:



Reports directly to the Operations Manager. Responsible for providing strategic direction to Foodstore team leaders to ensure safe and effective operations and processes. Work collaboratively with the Operations Manager and Department Managers to determine current and future capabilities required for effective execution of merchandising, marketing, talent development, and driving sales. Works in conjunction with all departments and department managers. Maintains internal relationships with all staff and department managers. Maintains external relationships with members, suppliers, stakeholders, industry organizations and media.

Who you are:



Minimum of five to ten years management experience in the retail industry. Experience in both the grocery industry and/or in a co-operative model would be considered an asset. Experience working in an environment governed by a Board of Directors would be considered an asset. Proficient in financial management including a comprehensive knowledge of profit and loss management. Capable of effectively managing inventory levels, ordering stock, and pricing products to meet gross margin targets. Exceptional people management and leadership skills including the ability to recruit, train, motivate, evaluate, correct, develop, and enhance staff performance in a diverse cultural environment. Possess strong oral and written communication skills. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills; Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills. Excellent organizational, time-management and project management skills. Progressive knowledge and experience in the industry including competition, trends and market dynamics. Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel as well as Point of Sale (POS) computer systems.

What you'll do:



Policy and Procedure

Ensure that all established policy and procedure is adhered to as determined by the Operations Manager. This is accomplished by:

Developing a firm understanding of existing policy and procedure; Upholding the mission, vision and strategic goals of the Co-op; Maintaining and enhancing established standards for members such as service, quality, ready for business and competitive pricing; Providing communication, training, and clear direction to team members; Being knowledgeable in the basic structure and operating procedures of the Co-op; and Effectively managing programs and resources.

Operational Oversight

Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Store and Gas Bar, while ensuring compliance with all company policies, procedures, and safety standards. Operational oversight includes, but is not limited to:

Managing inventory levels, conducting regular stock checks, and coordinating with suppliers to ensure adequate supply of products; Monitoring sales trends, analyzing performance metrics, and developing strategies to optimize sales and profitability; Ensuring the standards of departmental presentation and operations are met including merchandizing, margins and inventory control; and Implement organizational goals as determined by the General Manager by leading the development of operational programs and actively participating in and providing subject matter expertise in the development of marking programs, advertising, and promotions.

Team Leadership and Management

The Store Manager is expected to provide strong leadership to departmental managers and staff. This includes but is not limited to:

Providing leadership, guidance, coaching, and support to departmental managers and their teams to ensure a positive and productive work environment; Fostering a culture of teamwork, accountability and continuous improvement among staff members; Holding regular performance conversations with management staff in addition to semi-annual performance reviews with the goal of coaching and empowering managers to fulfill and exceed the duties of their roles; Holding weekly departmental meetings with management team and complete a department scorecard with each department manager every financial period (13 in total); and Identifying and providing support to departments in need of assistance.

Sales and Marketing

Provide support to Foodstore and Gas Bar department managers in managing the resources of the Co-operative effectively to generate net savings that meet and exceed budgeted targets. This can be accomplished by:

Developing marketing and merchandising programs to maximize sales targets; Monitoring expenses to ensure that resources are effectively utilized; Adhering to corporate policies for profitability, including ordering, inventory control, and merchandising standards; Ensuring all Federate Co-operative Limited ("FCL") promotions and programs are implemented in store; and Providing leadership and direction to departments to ensure that they are achieving financial targets in sales, margins, expenses, and profits.

Margins

Assist departments in adhering to their designated margins and ensure that they are managing them effectively. This includes:

Ensuring departments are maintaining budgeted margins; Conducting weekly price checks to ensure the Co-op remains competitive; Develop systems to ensure that the cost of goods is controlled; Offering guidance and assistance to managers regarding compliance with accounting procedures during the processing of invoices and claims; Assisting department managers in maintaining price integrity within the point of sale system.

Merchandising

Support and coach managers on the proper management of merchandise, including but not limited to:

Promoting the sale of Co-op merchandise while complying with the Co-op's purchasing policy; Ensuring the maintenance of adequate inventories; Support department managers in setting prices for merchandize in line with Co-operative margins and markups; Provide assistance in the receiving and warehousing practises of department merchandise; Ensure all merchandising meets quality standards of the Co-operative; Initiate eye-catching, balanced merchandizing displays while maintaining counter efficiency, sales per square foot, etc. and To sell slow-moving merchandize or discontinue obsolete lines.

Personnel Management & Leadership

Oversee and provide the day-to-day management of department managers. This includes:

Provide leadership in the area of employee relations, hiring, training and development and correction, engaging Human Resources when support is required; Recruitment functions including resume screening, interviewing and hiring; Following established human resource polices and procedures; Motivating staff to perform their job duties towards common objectives while serving as a role model to other employees; Maintaining a positive work environment with strong morale; Ensuring staff have a clear understanding of their job descriptions, expectations, company policies and procedures as well as departmental goals and programs; Helping department managers to identify when progressive corrective action is necessary and working with Human Resources to determine the appropriate course of action; Providing leadership, coaching, training and development to the management team; Conducting year-end performance reviews for the management team; and Ensure department managers are adhering to territorial, and federal legislation, including all health and safety legislation.
