The opportunity

Reporting to the Director, Core Systems Architecture, we need a Storage Architect to plan, deploy and support CBC/Radio-Canada IT infrastructure. It\xe2\x80\x99s an opportunity to help shape the way the corporation works internally and make a contribution towards our \xe2\x80\x9cSpace for us all\xe2\x80\x9d strategic plan.

As a part of the enterprise infrastructure architecture team - working out of Montreal or Toronto - you will be mandated to design IT infrastructure systems, with a specific eye toward Storage infrastructure. Working in collaboration with the corporation different stakeholders, you will help translate the needs and requirements into a robust infrastructure plan.

Who are you and where are you now

You are a Storage Administrator or a Pre-Sales Engineer who wants to step up to an Architect role. You want to work closely with internal teams, making presentations and providing training. You want to design and develop innovative solutions, on a bigger scale, that span the country; the amount of data you will work with here is second only to the most prominent financial institutions and government bodies.

Media files are highly nuanced and incredibly complicated; moving our broadcasting content from on-prem servers to the cloud is a complex technical feat. And that\xe2\x80\x99s just the beginning. In this role, you will continuously be challenged to apply your judgment, knowledge, experience and analytical skills to:

  • Plan, develop and design CBC/Radio-Canada data centre infrastructure, storage and backup solutions.
  • Define solutions for heterogeneous environments that span across functional, technical and business domains.
  • Design and develop innovative solutions, documents technical specifications, with an eye towards simplicity, reliability, manageability, scalability, extensibility, performance and reuse
  • Act as a technology expert by consulting and mentoring junior staff.
  • Conduct specialized studies and technical assessments of the latest digital and broadcast technologies.
  • Identify and propose innovative ideas for optimizing our infrastructure for media production and distribution.
  • Synthesize and explain to non-experts technological innovations to make them understandable and accessible across the Corporation.
  • Collaborate with the other enterprise architects (computing, networking, media, and digital production) in order to align all aspects of our media and IT infrastructure and the business requirements.

What you bring:
  • The education. You have a post-secondary degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or a related IT degree, P.Eng qualification is a definite asset.
  • The language. Bilingualism or a desire to achieve it, in French and English is highly beneficial.
  • The expertise. You have 5+ years of experience working with server, virtualization, networking, storage and security technologies. You have hands-on exposure:
  • Designing, planning and deploying solutions in a highly available and scalable 24/7 environment.
  • Applying architecture style and integration patterns, including service-oriented architecture (SOA), middleware.
  • Monitoring systems, such as SolarWinds, HP Openview or Nagios.
  • The knowledge. You have a direct understanding of data centre standards, technologies and storage systems including vendors such as Dell, EMC, NetApp, and Pure.
  • The strategic approach. You are highly aware of the importance of simplicity and scalability. You have the patience to consider all options before jumping into a decision. You are motivated by building robust, reliable processes and solutions that are replicable. You can balance multiple projects simultaneously and execute decisions independently.
  • The relationship building finesse. You can nurture strong two-way relationships with peers, partners, clients, staff, senior managers, and external technological vendors. You have outstanding communication skills. You are comfortable presenting technical concepts and solutions to a nontechnical audience. You know how to listen and you understand perspectives.
  • The flexibility. You are able and willing to work outside of regular working hours. You can travel between Montreal and Toronto when required.
