The Staff Solicitor is responsible for preparing, negotiating, reviewing and approving commercial contracts and land development related agreements such as airspace parcel agreements, servicing agreements, access agreements, covenants, statutory rights of way, easements, road closure by-laws, land title documents and other related documents. Prepares, negotiates, reviews and approves commercial contracts including complex partnership and operating agreements, funding agreements, leases, licences, purchase and sale agreements, and other related documents. Oversees completion of property acquisitions and dispositions, including reviewing and approving title searches, land title forms, statement of adjustments, and other related documents. Provides legal advice and opinions on municipal, corporate, real estate, land use, environmental, risk management, procurement and other legal issues to City departments. Reviews and drafts reports to Council and Committee, provides guidance to administrative personnel in the Legal Department and performs related work as required.
Requirements include an LL.B or J.D. from a recognized law school along with current membership, in good standing, with the Law Society of British Columbia. A minimum of 3 to 5 years of current experience in the practice of law is required, together with solid experience in real estate transactions, leases and commercial contracts, land development and legal drafting. Thorough knowledge of the policies, rules, regulations and legal requirements governing the work and of the City as it relates to the work. Thorough knowledge of Land Title Act, Local Government Act, Community Charter, and related legislation. Sound knowledge of client management techniques. Ability to provide sound legal advice in a logical and concise manner. Ability to provide guidance and lead the work of staff. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. Experience with myLTSA (ie. Land Title and Survey Authority electronic services), BCOnline (ie. e-government services for Legal Professionals) and legal research resources. Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License for the Province of British Columbia is required. This is a job share opportunity at 40% FTE until May 30, 2024, subject to extension.

Current Incumbent\xe2\x80\x99s Schedule: Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 8:30AM \xe2\x80\x93 4:30PM.
