Grow your career. Be the difference. Leading the commercialization of ground-breaking technology that captures CO\xe2\x82\x82 directly from air is challenging and exhilarating. As a member of the CE team, you\xe2\x80\x99ll be surrounded by smart, adventurous, curious people committed to progressing our Direct Air Capture (DAC) and AIR TO FUELS TM technologies. We\xe2\x80\x99re a diverse team of innovators hailing from around the world with a shared vision, purpose, and commitment to deliver large scale climate change solutions. Our headquarters is in Squamish, B.C., and our presence is expanding in many other markets around the world as we commercialize our technologies

Our culture combines our heritage as a small company with our ambitious goals. We have a passion for what we do and believe our work will have a true and lasting impact on the world. Many of our employees are drawn to CE because of the direct connection between the game-changing work we do and their own personal values.

At our core, Carbon Engineering values integrity, growth, excellence in execution, and fun. This is an environment where people matter, and contributions are noticed. Our employees work hard and are given the opportunity to learn and grow from mistakes. Diversity is embraced, and we value an inclusive work environment where every employee has an equal opportunity to be heard. We work in a dynamic environment and thrive on tackling rewarding and complex problems as a team.

Position Scope

As Senior Process Systems Engineer \xe2\x80\x93 Dynamic Simulation, you will be a part of an elite team which defines the requirements, optimizes and validates the technical and economic performance of Carbon Engineering\xe2\x80\x99s Direct Air Capture (DAC) and Air to Fuels\xe2\x84\xa2 (A2F) production systems.

You will contribute to the end-to-end system engineering of complex processes and equipment. You will rigorously apply scientific, system engineering, and mathematical principles to the creation of high fidelity, dynamic models of unit operations and full commercial chemical plants that run in real time and mimic behavior of operating production plants. The modeling and simulation will ultimately reveal new development paths and help de-risk commercialization while uncovering potential improvements to the performance of operating facilities.

The over-riding objective is that CE DAC & A2F systems will have the lowest cost/ton of any DAC CO2 systems and the lowest cost/GJ of any very low carbon synthetic liquid fuel production systems.

This position reports to the Director, Process Systems Engineering based in Calgary, AB. The successful candidate will be based in either Calgary AB, Squamish or Vancouver, B.C. working onsite at least 2 days a week.

Responsibilities

Assessment of operability and control of a highly integrated chemical plant over the entire life cycle.
Develop fully integrated engineering and physics-based steady-state and dynamic models and simulations that represent plant performance in many geographic settings, resource constraints, and seasonally variable operating conditions and time scales.
Support the design of integrated processes and equipment by working with domain experts and creating dynamic simulation models that facilitate the analysis of information and the co-optimization of interacting sub-processes.
Formulate and test assumptions for improved system performance. Ensure that numerical modeling results are correct and properly represent plant processes.
Model chemical and physical processes and size equipment for commercial plants.
Analysis of intrinsically dynamic unit operations and integrated systems.
Analysis of historic operational data collected from integrated processes that leads to technical discovery and operational optimization.
Identify and characterize the relationship between plant location and system response.
Develop simulation-based training tools and decision support systems.

Education and Experience

Education:
Ph.D. or Master\xe2\x80\x99s in chemical engineering

Experience:
10 + years industrial experience in oil and gas or chemical production.
Experience leading high fidelity dynamic simulation projects (operator training simulations, multi-purpose dynamic simulations) for oil and gas or chemical processes using commercial simulation software (HYSYS Dynamics, Aspen Dynamics, Dynsim, UniSim, etc.).
Proven success in mathematical modeling and simulation of complex, dynamic chemical and physical systems.
Strong software programming experience that may include .NET, MATLAB, Ansys Fluent and Python.
Familiarity with commercial control software, PLCs and DCS systems is a plus.

Key Competencies

Expertise in chemical process dynamic simulation is essential.
Proficient in control theory, control logic, distributed architectures for control and/or simulations.
In depth understanding of mass transfer, thermodynamics, kinetics and other chemical engineering principles and disciplines.
Applied mathematics and computer modeling of complex, integrated, dynamic systems.
Ability to follow project goals and maintain a schedule.
Understands and has applied systems engineering principles and disciplines.
Capable of developing simulation models of air and water purification processes at varying levels of fidelity ranging from detailed, first-principle models to more descriptive lumped-parameter models.
Chemical plant process and equipment technoeconomic analysis
Strong programming and scripting skills.
Ability to effectively communicate technical information.
Good understanding of statistics and analysis of time-series data and dynamic systems.
Familiar with Machine-Learning approaches and their application in time-series data analytics.

Joining Carbon Engineering provides you more than a career \xe2\x80\x93 it\xe2\x80\x99s a calling for those who are ready to make a difference in climate action. We provide hope.
