The Spiritual Health Practitioner (SHP) responds with compassion and inclusiveness to the spiritual health needs identified by families, patients and staff through a tailored approach to assessment and care. Reflecting a holistic, compassionate methodology to care, the Spiritual Health Practitioner advances an evidence based spiritual health care approach within the hospital. As such, you are skilled in providing existential, spiritual, and religious patient care across beliefs, cultural perspectives and practices. The successful incumbent will show proficiency in the following areas: Interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain collaborative working relationships with members of the interdisciplinary team. Self-direction and independent decision making. Sound clinical judgment and critical thinking skills; time management and prioritization skills, with a demonstrated ability to function effectively within a dynamic and challenging environment. Effective communication with a patient centered focus; and demonstrated problem solving, critical thinking and conflict resolution skills.
Description:
Aligned with the AHS mandate of a patient/family centered approach to care, the casual Spiritual Health Practitioner (SHP) is accountable for providing direct service delivery in all matters related to spiritual health care in the context of health and care delivered at the UAH site. The Spiritual Health Practitioner responds to spiritual health needs identified by families, patients and staff through a process of spiritual assessment and care. Reflecting a holistic, compassionate approach to care, the SHP advances an evidenced-based spiritual health care approach inclusive of patients/families, staff, physicians, and volunteers which is integrated into inter-professional collaborative team practice. Spiritual Care Professional Practice is to be delivered in alignment with and advancement of AHS provincial professional practice standards, frameworks, and guidelines. Given the variety of spiritual, religious, cultural and philosophical beliefs that co-exist within the hospital, the SHP encourages respect for individual patient/family beliefs within the health care team. As a health care professional, the SHP is skilled in providing existential, spiritual, and religious patient care across beliefs, cultural perspectives, and practices. The SHP contributes to caring for the soul of the hospital, facilitating integration of a holistic approach to supporting the wellbeing of patient, families and staff. On call work for the UAH/Stollery/Mazankowski and RAH sites over evenings and weekends on a shared rotation is required.

Required Qualifications:

Undergraduate Theological degree and/or Spirituality/Religion and first year of a Master of Theology and/or Spirituality/Religion degree or equivalent required. Minimum completion of one Advanced or two basic Clinical Psychospiritual Education units with the (Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association canadienne de soins spirituels, (CASC/ACSS). with a commitment to completing the additional units. Current membership in the (Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association canadienne de soins spirituels, (CASC/ACSS). Current membership with ACTA The Association of Counselling Therapy of Alberta Knowledge of and skills to address the needs of families encountering crisis, disability, loss, bereavement and end-of-life Ability to engage in self-reflective practice and demonstrates ability to assess the impact of one's own spirituality, beliefs, values, assumptions, and power dynamics in relationship with families/staff. Critical thinking and application of principles of evidence-based practice. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to collaborate respectfully and work effectively with various spiritual, religious, cultural groups and all levels of staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

Completed CPE training with CASC/ACSS and a commitment towards certification with CASC/ACSS Completion of one advanced unit of CPE preferred. Hospital spiritual care experience preferred.
