Must Haves:

  • 5+ years' experience in advanced SD networks and network security preferably for Ontario K-12 school boards
  • 10+ years hands-on experience with network infrastructure solutions and technologies including LAN/WAN, VPN, VXLAN, fog computing, network function virtualization (NFV), server virtualization, cloud platforms, and hardware (switches, routers, firewalls)
  • 5+ years' hands-on experience with software-defined networking (SDN, SD-WAN, SD-Edge)
  • 5+ years' hands-on experience with Ontario K-12 school boards' networks (WAN, LAN, Wi-Fi, internet service delivery)
Description:
  • The Specialized IT Consultant, Level 3, role requires extensive knowledge of network connectivity, network security and internet technologies with demonstrated hands-on experience analyzing, configuring, implementing, and troubleshooting network and network security solutions for the Ontario K-12 school board environment. This resource is responsible for, but not limited to:
  • Providing hands-on subject matter expertise troubleshooting with securing software-defined networking (SDN) technology including:
  • Software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) including Fortinet, Cisco Meraki, Palo Alto, etc.
  • Emerging SD-Edge such as VMware VeloCloud, Silver Peak, etc
  • Providing subject matter expertise for the design, development and delivery of technical training courses on secure networking solutions, as well as Network Traffic and Data Management (NTDM), Next-Generation Security (NG-SEC) architecture and products to support boards' secure broadband modernization implementations
  • Providing implementation guidance, and hands-on troubleshooting and configuration of network data monitoring and management systems including SolarWinds, FortiManager and Panorama
  • Troubleshooting, providing analysis, and recommending solutions on complex network performance issues using network performance management tools and other network troubleshooting/performance benchmarking techniques
  • Performing network load testing, preparing test plans, completing the testing analysis, and risk assessments to ensure sound network architecture using load testing tools
  • Configuring, installing and troubleshooting network hardware including modems, switches, routers, and servers
  • Configuring and administering network protocols such as MPLS, VPLS, and VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP)
  • Providing subject matter expertise, configuration, troubleshooting, training, and implementation guidance with network security and network protection solutions, including:
  • Next-generation cyber security technologies
  • Distributed denial of service (DDoS) protection
  • Advanced intrusion prevention systems (IPS) and intrusion detection systems (IDS)
  • Endpoint detection and response (EDR) and other endpoint security solutions
  • Cloud-based cyber security solutions (e.g. Zscaler, Cisco Umbrella)
  • Staying abreast of the ever-evolving cyber threat landscape to provide subject matter expertise, guidance and advice on tactical and operational network security practices
  • Providing subject matter expertise, analysis, configuration, troubleshooting, and implementation guidance with network operations centre (NOC) and security operations centre (SOC) technologies, including:
  • Security Information and Event Management (SIEM)
  • Security Orchestration, Automation and Response (SOAR)
  • Providing subject matter expertise, analysis, configuration, troubleshooting, training, and implementation guidance with authentication solutions and technologies for:
  • Password-based authentication
  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA)
  • Certificate-based authentication
  • Designing and building network data monitoring and management systems
  • Creating/updating detailed system documentation and technical specifications various solutions and architecture, including SD-WAN, network security and network protection solutions, and NOC and SOC solutions
  • Assessing new and emerging network security solutions and technology trends and industry analysis, including, but not limited to wireless network security practices including authentication and edge security
  • Presenting to various stakeholders, as needed
  • Deliver on other duties as assigned. Provide status and project status reports on other deliverables assigned.
  • This work involves working in close partnership with various government departments, the K-12 education sector, telecommunications providers and network technology vendors to develop customized approaches and implementation plans.
  • The manager will have the right to assign additional work, directly or indirectly related to this initiative as needed to support unit priorities as and when required.
