Job Summary

The role of Specialist Solution Design for the TDS (Transportation Domain Services) team is responsible for producing technology solutions aligned with business objectives within the CN Transportation Domain. This is achieved through four main functions:

  • Consultation - participating in workshops with various stakeholders, understanding user & business requirements, researching data, and technological capabilities
  • Ownership - translating information from workshops into a Technology Blueprint or software design
  • Planning - Working with the TDS Solution Architect and Product Manager in creating Feature and Story backlogs in Azure Boards with delivery timelines, ensuring that Features are properly prioritized to coincide with client demand as well as working with Service Introduction and Release Management staff to ensure that all requirements for technical go-live and go-live events are met
  • Coordinating - Lead team of 2 to 5 developers/testers, driving daily scrum meetings, driving backlog grooming and sprint planning sessions in order to get effort estimates and acting as liaison between scrum team and product manager on sprint progress and capacity
Main Responsibilities

Technology Blueprint & Design - 40%
  • Support the Enterprise & Solution Architect during their requirements phase as well as providing expertise on current capabilities to build the high-level architecture
  • Translate a portion of the high-level solution architecture document into existing capabilities available within the domain(s) of expertise
  • If needed, define new capabilities required by the project as identified by architecture; ensure maximum automation in the design for deployment. Instruct and host workshops to determine sizing.
  • Lead low/medium complexity blueprints and/or participate in high complexity blueprints
  • Responsible for ensuring the blueprint, which covers domain(s) of expertise, complies with CN Information Security
  • Participation in product and vendor selections (RFP/RFI/RFQ)
Project Delivery Planning - 20%
  • Estimate efforts of User Stories and Task associated with domain(s) of expertise as well as driving Story backlog grooming and sprint planning ceremonies in order to generate story point and task estimates for upcoming sprints
  • Provide on-going sprint burndown and capacity reports to the Product Manager as well as act as liaison during governance meetings with project stakeholders
  • Define and create test scenarios and add them to Azure Test Plan
  • Identify any special requirements for transition-to-core as well as document and present production readiness criteria at Service Introduction gating meetings
Project Delivery Oversight - 40%
  • Oversee solution delivery to ensure alignment with blueprint and adjust blueprint as required
  • Work with Product Manager to adjust deliverables and timelines as required.
  • Provide functional and technical leadership and coordination between various delivery teams.
  • Provide functional and technical assistance and direction to delivery teams.

  • Owner of the sections related to domain(s) of expertise in the Blueprint for low/medium complexity projects
  • Assist business by providing the right solution(s) for their needs with efficiency, safety, security, productivity, profitability, and cost-saving in mind
  • Provide artifacts to increase transparency to project teams and stakeholders; create deliverables through constant collaboration cycles, ensuring all involved will be in agreement with proposals to keep the project on-track and assist other teams with planning
  • Research on industry-standard practices and technologies; ensure our position in the Global Market is constantly improving by introducing newer standards that will aid in faster production of solutions, increased efficiencies for administration and clients, and improved visibility

  • Influence vendors within domain(s) of expertise to release solutions better aligned with CN's needs, with increased security and automation
  • Position current technology capabilities in the direction of their roadmap and influence Product Owners, Service Offering Managers, and Product Managers to adhere to them

Requirements

Education/Certification/Designation
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent degree & experience
Skills/Knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of Domain Driven Design
  • Strong knowledge of event driven technologies such as MQ, CDC, Confluent Kafka
  • Ability to translate business requirements into technology solutions
  • Ability to estimate efforts and costs required for delivery
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in parallel and meet deliverable dates
  • Very good technical documentation skills
  • Very good communication and presentation skills
  • Proactive, able to plan, address or mitigate technical risk
  • Knowledge of IT security principles
  • Ability to clarify requirements and ensure solution meets business needs
  • Knowledge of leveraging Mulesoft and Java Microservices (Java) for extract, transform, & load data flows
  • Strong sense of prioritization for meeting deadlines
  • Ability to navigate within a complex I&T organization
  • Ability to lead in complex and/or ambiguous situations
Experience
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of overall work experience
  • Minimum 4 years' experience designing and deploying solutions in domain(s) of expertise
  • Minimum of 2-5 years with event driven systems
Working Conditions

Occasional business travel (in Canada and US) in accordance with CN policy
