Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries Inc. (Al-Pac) is seeking a
Specialist, Forest Certification
to work out of our mill site and/or office near
Athabasca
or in
St. Albert, Alberta
. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing Al-Pac's compliance with forest management and responsible fibre sourcing certification standards and regulations in support of Al-Pac's sustainability objectives, as well as certification compliance integrity. The Specialist provides advice and guidance to internal stakeholders with respect to certification and regulation compliance and leads cross-divisional teams to integrate standards into daily operations to meet certification and regulation requirements while driving continuous improvement in sustainability. The position also contributes to analyzing, recommending and developing Al-Pac responses to emerging forest management and responsible fibre sourcing regulations, directives and other requirements. For St. Albert office-based candidates,
regular travel to the mill site will be required.

Role Responsibilities
1. Compliance, Monitoring & Reporting
Collaborate with teams across the organization to ensure compliance with forest management certification and responsible fibre sourcing standards and regulations (e.g., European Union Deforestation Regulation), including identifying and addressing potential non-compliance issues.
Conduct internal audits as required, and coordinate external audits and assessments of forest management and responsible fibre sourcing practices, collaborating with internal teams, external stakeholders and auditors to ensure alignment with certification and regulation criteria.
Develop, implement and monitor corrective action plans to resolve non-compliance and maintain compliance with certification and regulation standards.
Lead cross-divisional teams that integrate certification and regulatory standards into Al-Pac's operations, working closely with departments across the organization to embed certification and regulation criteria in management systems and day-to-day activities.
Develop reports, presentations, briefings and other materials as required and maintain accurate documentation and records related to compliance.
2. Project Management
Lead and manage projects, such as coordinating audits and ensuring certification and regulation requirements are addressed in management systems and day-to-day activities.
Collaborate with teams to align certification and regulation compliance strategies with broader sustainability goals and business objectives.
Track project progress, manage timelines and ensure deliverables are completed on schedule, addressing any challenges that may arise.
3. Expertise & Advisory Support
Provide expert guidance and coaching to teams across the organization to ensure understanding of related certification and regulation standards and compliance requirements.
Advise internal teams on the risks and opportunities associated with related certification standards and regulations, helping to shape decision-making and operational practices.
Keep up to date with evolving related certification and regulation requirements and market trends, translating these into actionable insights for Al-Pac.
Maintain key relationships necessary to maximize certification and regulation awareness, insights and analysis within scope of work.
4. Stakeholder Engagement & Communication
Engage with external stakeholders in support of developing certification and regulation awareness, monitoring, compliance and audit activities.
5. Data Collection & Analysis
Analyze data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities related to certification compliance.
Oversee the operation of related certification data and information systems, ensuring accurate and timely collection.
Work with stakeholders to coordinate the collection and analysis of evidence required for related audits and ongoing compliance efforts, proactively identifying areas for improvement.
Contribute data and documentation to sustainability reports, questionnaires, surveys and other information requests.
6. Procedure Development & Implementation
Develop and refine procedures related to related certification standards and regulations, ensuring they align with Al-Pac's operational needs and strategic objectives.
Provide guidance on the application of related certification and regulation procedures across the organization and monitor their effective implementation.
Collaborate with teams to assess the impact of certification and regulation procedures and recommend improvements as needed to maintain compliance and competitive advantage.
Role Requirements
Post-secondary degree in Environmental Science, Forestry, Sustainability, or a related field.
Minimum 7 years of progressive experience overseeing certification programs, preferably related to forest management or responsible sourcing, or in a related field.
Experience in a forestry, manufacturing environment and/or commodity industry is an asset.
Other
In-depth knowledge of FSC certification standards.
Knowledge of other relevant responsible sourcing regulations, standards, policies, directives and requirements (e.g., European Union Deforestation Regulation).
Understanding of relevant current and emerging sustainability issues, including but not limited to, biodiversity and ecosystem-based management, new reporting requirements and global responsible supply chain initiatives.
Knowledge of ESG reporting and disclosure standards, frameworks, requirements and best practices, including but not limited to, IAASB/IFRS Sustainability Standards 1 & 2.
Strong project management skills, including the ability to develop and implement project plans, set milestones, manage timelines and coordinate resources.
Strong document and information management skills, including collecting, tracking, analyzing, and presenting data and information.
Clear, effective and persuasive verbal, written and presentation communication skills for diverse audiences.
Strong computer skills to develop and support business processes.
Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and manage activities efficiently to meet business needs.
Ability to understand and interpret policies, procedures and standards.
Ability to engage with stakeholders and the public with professionalism, tact, discretion, good judgement and trust.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage private, sensitive, and confidential information appropriately.
