General Summary:
The goal of the Environment, Health & Safety Specialist (EHS Specialist) is enforce and maintain the framework for a safe work environment. The EHS Specialist will review, evaluate, and analyze the workplace as well as design programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent illness or injury to employees. Reporting to the Environment, Health & Safety Manager, the EHS Specialist will act as a subject matter expert in industrial hygiene and workplace safety. Keeping abreast of regulatory and corporate standards within these areas, the EHS Specialist will put forward effective means for ensuring compliance and health and safety performance. This role will require supporting the site Departments in terms of occupational health and safety by acting as an advisor and as a contributor.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the development and promotion of a health and safety culture.
  • Play an advisory role to the employees and managers for occupational health and safety matters.
  • Promote and coordinate prevention activities (implementing corporate programs, risk assessment).
  • Participate in incident investigations, prepare reports and follow-up, identify root cause and ensure that appropriate control measures are implemented.
  • Develop, identify relevant training activities or needs, develop or launch various training programs.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of EHS programs.
  • Ensure responsibility for the ergonomic action plan of its sector.
  • Participate in the implementation and monitoring of the health, safety and environment management system (HSEMS).
  • Participate in internal and external audits, including Taro Customer audits.
  • Lead and coordinate meetings and activities of the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
  • Analyze the work environment (air quality, noise level, lighting, thermal stress etc.).
  • Contribute to maintaining and ensuring environmental compliance with local, provincial and federal regulations
  • Manage the WHMIS /GHS database.
  • Prepare and record statistical data and monthly reports.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent knowledge of applicable OHS laws, regulations and standards.
  • Ability to provide training at all levels in the organization.
  • Familiar with behavioral safety principles.
  • A self-starter with the ability to manage priorities and those of others.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a high consideration to detail.
  • Promote, establish and maintain a good team spirit
  • Change management skills (performing risk analysis and implementation of controls).
  • Sound knowledge in occupational hygiene within lab and production environments (asset).
  • Technical knowledge of the EHS management methods and systems, as well as their implementation.
  • Good knowledge of cGMP manufacturing environment;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent computer skills and using various programs including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Adobe Presenter.

Background and Experience:
  • Minimum of 5 to 8 years of relevant health & safety experience within an industrial environment and laboratory setting.
  • Minimum post-secondary education (Diploma or Degree) combined with a certification in Occupational Safety and Health. Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) preferred, or willing to attain.
  • Comprehensive knowledge in occupational hygiene, industrial safety, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations.
  • Understanding of the Environmental Protection Act and related environmental legislation to fulfill requirements for hazardous waste, air emissions, and other environmental reporting.
  • Familiarity with WSIB claims management, construction projects, Pre-Start Health & Safety Reviews, and contractor safety an asset.

Problem Solving:
  • Safety and occupational health problem solving experience is necessary. The work typically requires interpretation of a variety of occupational circumstances to adapt known control or protective measures to eliminate or minimize hazardous situations.
  • Work assignments require the identification of elements contributing to human and machine failure which may lead to injury or property damage.

Working Conditions:
  • Working conditions will vary. The HSE Specialist will be required to work in all areas of the Canadian operations of Taro Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
