Job Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Brand Engagement with a dotted line to the Director, Brand Experience and Chief Marketing Officer, the Social Media Strategist & Creator is a digital storyteller who will help shape Mohawk College's online presence by substantially evolving our current social media strategy, crafting engaging posts, videos, and interactive content that captivates and builds our community and brand. This role blends creativity alongside a deep understanding of social media that develops content which informs, entertains and supports the college brand and its strategic priorities. Given the direct impact on Mohawk College's reputation, the candidate must exercise sound judgement, be mindful and have tact representing Mohawk College's voice in alignment with the brand strategy and guidelines identified by the Chief Marketing Officer while safeguarding the College's reputation.
As a representative of Mohawk College's online presence, the incumbent must demonstrate professionalism and discretion in all social media communications and content must align with the College's brand strategy, tone and reputation. This role also requires a strong awareness of messaging approaches which directly influences the college external brand and reputation. In their capacity as the lead for social media monitoring, the incumbent must demonstrate maturity and good judgement in leading the escalation process with Senior Leadership of damaging social media content.
In addition to reputational impact, this role will also have a direct connection to strategic enrolment management efforts. As most social media communications will be applicant and student-facing, the work the incumbent drives will directly contribute to recruitment and retention of applicants and students at Mohawk College.
As well, this role will help shape and update social media governance policies across Mohawk College channels, providing insight and actively contributing to annual policy revisions in partnership with the Manager, Brand Engagement.
The following metrics are the key performance accountabilities that must be met on an annual basis.
Develop, execute and be accountable for the performance of Mohawk College's social media strategy and core brand channels ensuring alignment to KPIs.
Propose involvement in other social media platforms as relevant to the developed strategy (Discord, Reddit, etc.).
Collaborate with Marketing leadership to align social media strategy with departmental priorities and Mohawk College's go to market plan, including creating and managing budgets and supporting key activations.
Manage owned channel social media advertising campaigns, including budget allocation and performance analysis against primary KPIs.
Conduct regular competitive audits/sector environmental scans and share findings with Marketing Team Leadership to encourage a shared understanding of social media trends taking shape in the sector.
Prepare reports on the performance of social media channels and initiatives to present to senior management and inform future strategies.
Social Media Content Creation & Community Engagement
Conduct research to architect & produce relevant content and social media campaigns against identified target audiences to drive primary KPIs.
Create resonant, relevant, timely, and on-brand original content including videos, graphics, blog posts, and social media posts aligned with department priorities, key narratives and Mohawk College's brand strategy.
Oversee and guide content creators across Mohawk College including academic / department SMEs, student's employees etc. to capture and create content aligned with social media strategy.
Utilize SEO best practice to increase content visibility and engagement.
Adapt content to suit creative best practice of different social media platforms and their respective audiences reach algorithms.
Develop an engagement strategy (by social media channel), aligned to the College's brand strategy, to enhance the depth of relationship developed between the Mohawk College brand and followers.
Propose and implement process improvements to improve workflows within the Brand Engagement Team and when collaborating with the Content & Creative Services Team and the Web Team.
Lead the escalation process of social media communications that are sensitive or that represent potential reputational damage to Communication and External Affairs Leadership.
Governance, Best Practice Alignment & Knowledge Sharing
Develop, inform and collaborate on appropriate social media governance policies to be applied across other social media accounts and channels across Mohawk College
In partnership with the Supervisor, contribute to annual revisions to social media policies and contribute toward any governance committees, working groups or motions that follow.
Provide recommendations and guidance to college departments overseeing other college social channels to ensure alignment with the Mohawk College brand, social media policies and share best practices.
Monitor, analyze and integrate social media trends / insights to optimize strategies and content in line with social media best practice.
Drive strategic and/or tactical innovation and explore new social media platforms and technologies to keep Mohawk College's social media practices "ahead of the curve".
Participate in Emergency Response Training and associated motions to support the Communications Branch in event of emergency situations impacting the College (e.g. social media monitoring, escalation & reporting, response drafting, etc.).
Other duties as assigned.
What you'll bring to the role:
A three-year degree/diploma in marketing, or relevant discipline
A minimum of 5 years of experience in social media strategy development, content creation and execution across multiple industries including post-secondary education
Minimum technical proficiency in the following types of tools is required:
