The Night Shelter Supervisor is responsible for overseeing overnight operations at the emergency shelter, ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of clients, staff, and volunteers. This role provides direct supervision during overnight hours, enforces shelter policies, responds to incidents or crises, and ensures a calm, respectful, and supportive environment for individuals experiencing homelessness.
Responsibilities
Supervise overnight shelter operations to ensure a safe, orderly, and supportive environment
Monitor client activity and enforce shelter rules, policies, and curfews consistently and respectfully
Provide direct supervision and guidance to overnight staff and volunteers
Respond appropriately to emergencies, conflicts, medical concerns, or behavioral incidents involving clients
Conduct regular facility rounds to ensure safety, cleanliness, and security
Complete incident reports, shift logs, and other required documentation accurately and in a timely manner
Assist clients with basic needs and provide referrals or information as appropriate
Coordinate with daytime staff regarding client concerns, incidents, or follow-up needs
Ensure compliance with organizational policies, safety procedures, and local regulations
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED
Prior experience in a supervisory, security, or human services role
Ability to remain calm, professional, and effective in high-stress or crisis situations
Strong communication, documentation, and conflict-resolution skills
Ability to work overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays as required
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience in a supervisory or leadership position
Experience working in homeless services, shelters, social services, or nonprofit environments
Training in crisis intervention, de-escalation, or trauma-informed care
CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
Bilingual skills are a plus
Ability to successfully pass a police background check
Physical & Work Requirements:
Ability to remain awake, alert, and attentive during overnight hours
Ability to walk, stand, and conduct periodic rounds throughout the facility
Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies
This position works in an emergency shelter setting serving individuals experiencing homelessness. The environment may be fast-paced and unpredictable, requiring flexibility, professionalism, sound judgment, and compassion.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $19.00-$22.00 per hour
Expected hours: 1 - 40 per week
