With the support of our leadership team and peers, our people are encouraged to share their perspectives.Job PurposeThe HSE Lead is responsible for overseeing and driving the Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) programs across the organization. This role ensures the effective implementation of safety protocols, compliance with environmental regulations, and the continuous improvement of safety practices to safeguard employees, contractors, and the environment. The HSE Lead plays a pivotal role in fostering a culture of safety and sustainability within the company. Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Culture
  • Acts as a role model by promoting Waiwardxe2x80x99s commitment to an incident-free culture and its core values, including adherence to the Life Saving Rules.
  • Drives a positive safety culture by leading behavioral safety initiatives like the Safety Interaction Program and Pause and Assess Program.
  • Facilitates and applies Waiward's HSE accountability framework to ensure all team members understand their roles and responsibilities.
  • Policy and Procedure Implementation
  • Oversees the development and site-specific customization of HSE Plans, incorporating Hazard Assessments, Emergency Response Plans, and Environmental Procedures.
  • Ensures full implementation and compliance with Waiwardxe2x80x99s HSE Core Practices, Shop Specific Procedures, and General Work Procedures.
  • Reviews regularly and provides feedback on HSE policies to ensure alignment with evolving regulations and industry best practices.
  • Hazard and Risk Management
  • Coordinates the three-tier Hazard Assessment process (Site Level Hazard Analysis, Job Hazard Analysis, and Field/Fabrication Level Hazard Assessments) and verify effective control measures are in place.
  • Monitors and analyzes hazard identification submissions and ensures timely resolution of reported issues.
  • Incident Management
  • Leads investigations for incidents with high-ranking Serious Injury or Fatality Potential (SIFP), using tools such as SCAT to determine root causes and assign SMART corrective actions.
  • Oversees the reporting, tracking, and closure of all incidents, near misses, and corrective actions in the internal incident management system.
  • Training and Competency
  • Designs and delivers site-specific HSE training programs, including new hire orientations, technical certifications, leadership training, and mentorship for New Inexperienced Workers.
  • Assists supervision in managing quarterly competency assessments.
  • Collaborates with Waiward internal leadership to track and ensure recertification and compliance with client-specific requirements.
  • Data Management and Reporting
  • Tracks and analyzes leading and lagging HSE performance indicators to identify trends, generate actionable insights, and improve safety outcomes.
  • Prepares detailed daily, weekly and monthly HSE reports for management, incorporating data from tools like the Nobody Gets Hurt cards and Pause and Assess cards.
  • Auditing and Continuous Improvement
  • Conducts regular audits of HSE practices, including FLHA assessments, compliance inspections, and HSE program evaluations, to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Participates in monthly/ bi-weekly HSE strategy meetings to review progress toward annual goals and recommend focus areas for enhancement.
  • Environmental Management
  • Oversees environmental compliance by integrating waste management, emissions reduction, and wildlife management strategies into HSE plans.
  • Ensures operations conduct proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials, adhering to site-specific environmental protocols.
  • Client and Regulatory Liaison
  • Acts as the primary point of contact for HSE matters with clients, regulatory authorities, and third-party auditors.
  • Collaborates with clients to align Waiwardxe2x80x99s HSE standards with their specific requirements and expectations.
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Leads the development, testing, and implementation of Emergency Response Plans for all sites, ensuring readiness for diverse scenarios, including medical emergencies, hazardous spills, and severe weather.
  • Team Development
  • Mentors HSE Advisors and team members, fostering their professional growth and competency in HSE practices.
  • Assists in recruiting and onboarding new HSE personnel, ensuring alignment with Waiwardxe2x80x99s safety culture and expectations.
Qualifications:
  • OH&S diploma or equivalent, CRSP would be considered an asset with at least three (3) years construction experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years as NCSO with relevant construction experience.
  • Current Class 5 Driverxe2x80x99s License and Driverxe2x80x99s Abstract.
  • Pre-Access Drug and Alcohol test is required.
  • WHMIS 2015 and CSTS 2020
  • Certifications required for the work being performed (Fall Protection, Elevated Work Platform, and Confined Space Entry & Monitor, etc.)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).
  • Expertise in software relevant to the role will be considered an asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Solid knowledge of investigation techniques (i.e., Taproot)
  • Basic auditing techniques (i.e., Core / ISO)
  • Knowledge of regulations and related codes.
  • Ability to prioritize work and problem solving.
Working ConditionsThe HSE Lead will primarily work in active construction sites, fabrication facility, or a client oil/gas site, which requires adaptability to moderate noise levels, extreme temperatures, and various potential hazards, including heavy equipment operation and moving machinery.This role involves physical demands such as climbing stairs and ladders, walking extended distances, and working at heights or within confined spaces. The incumbent must be prepared to work outdoors in inclement weather, including cold conditions and slippery surfaces, and may occasionally need to carry moderate loads.Additionally, the role requires regular driving between locations and the ability to function effectively in an office environment for administrative tasks.Physical RequirementsThe incumbent is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: viewing a computer terminal for extended periods of time; and extensive reading.
