JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Site Environmental Advisor.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Environment Health and Safety, this position is responsible to provide environmental services to meet the needs of Renewable Generation (RG), including Hydroelectric/Thermal plants. Provide environmental expertise, oversight and specialized support to achieve performance goals for RG associated with an assigned region.

Key accountabilities include obtaining Environmental Compliance Approvals and/or other approvals and permits, providing interpretation and advice on environmental legislation and policies, advising on environmental problems and issues, assessing environmental performance, identifying environmental adverse conditions, and assisting in developing corrective actions and coordinating assigned environmental audit activities to support assigned region.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Provide immediate response to Operations and Maintenance staff to support short term action following an environmental occurrence;
  • Implement and manage the Emergency Management System (EMS) programs within the assigned RG region;
  • Evaluate ongoing environmental performance at RG facilities and identify the need for improved program requirements, standards, or procedures;
  • Work with facilities to establish site-specific annual performance targets aimed at continual improvement;
  • Monitor, assess and report on the effectiveness of RG\'s environmental performance through field visits and self assessments;
  • Coordinate RG activities in support of environmental audits and assessments within assigned Region;
  • Liaise and negotiate with regulatory authorities (e.g., Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks [MECP], Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry [MNRF], Department of Fisheries and Oceans [DFO]), and the public to obtain and influence conditions of environmental permits, approvals and licenses, and to address issues related to environmental compliance and performance;
  • Provide support to local external stakeholder and indigenous community management by preparing communications and responding to queries about environmental issues as required, such as environmental permits, approvals and water management plans;
  • Prepare, analyze and interpret internal performance and environmental compliance reports for environmental regulatory agencies;
  • Establish, maintain and utilize environmental data and reporting systems;
  • Provide OPG environmental specialists, other staff, external consultants and contractors with environmental technical support regarding local knowledge and RG environmental standards
EDUCATION
  • University degree in Engineering, Applied Science, Environmental Science or other relevant discipline
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a flexible hybrid office environment;
  • Experience related to environmental planning and approvals processes;
  • Experience in the areas of environmental issue identification and resolution, including environmental effect predictions and mitigation for activities related to electricity generation, particularly with regards to the RG business, including resources and stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills to ensure effectiveness on teams, and with both internal and external parties;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders and across multiple teams;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, experience in shaping and maintaining productive relationships and partnerships across the business unit and among stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment with the ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously;
  • Commitment to high standards of procedural safety and regulatory compliance;
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook)
