POSITION SUMMARY:
The Simulation Program at St. Joseph's Healthcare System encompasses six sites which are state of the art facilities and interprofessional centres of excellence - Centre for Education, Learning and Simulation (CELS). These centres strive to improve patient safety and quality care through education, research, evaluation and innovation. The Centres are where learners, health disciplines professionals, researchers, administrators and physicians come together to utilize simulation tools to enhance their technical and non-technical skills in a safe and realistic learning environment. The Centres house more than a million dollars in capital equipment and each year provides customized and quality clinical training and education sessions to more than 4000 internal and external healthcare professionals and learners, individually and interprofessional.
The Simulation Educator is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Simulation Program across St. Joseph's Healthcare System. This includes promoting and providing simulation services to support the delivery of clinical education, quality improvement, research and assessment activities.
The Simulation Educator has to be knowledgeable in the field of simulation and clinical education. This includes clinical education and the use and operation of different simulation techniques. The Simulation Educator is also expected to maintain proficiency in existing and emerging technologies including theory, design and implementation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters Degree in a health-related field required
Physician Assistant or Medical Doctor is preferred
Regulated Health Professional (Psychology, Nursing, OT, PT, Social Work, etc) preferred
Minimum two years experience in education/technology resources
Knowledge-based information services
Education/planning for learners, staff and physicians
Experience with simulation technology and clinical education
Ability to independently sustain level of knowledge in simulation field, including proficiency in existing/emerging technologies and clinical education
Ability to learn new software and hardware quickly and independently
Ability to work well under pressure, set priorities, and make decisions
Ability to work with internal and external individuals from different disciplines and different levels of training
Self-motivated who required little to no supervision with the ability to work also as a team
Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic environment
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Knowledge and exposure/experience to a hospital clinical environment
Comfortable with public speaking and presentation
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collaborate with other team members and faculty to plan and design simulation scenarios to ensure the centre can run at maximal capacity
Preparation of scenarios to ensure best clinical and non-clinical practice are followed
Pre-brief scenarios to support a safe learning environment for learners
Participate in scenarios, this may include role playing (i.e. nurse, MD, family member)
Post scenarios debrief of simulation environment
Support simulation technician in simulation scenario set up and take down
Lead the design process for innovative task trainer models suitable for simulation education
Participate in the production of scholarly work based on simulation activities
Sustain up to date knowledge of simulation specific literature and translate into practice within the Simulation Program
Educates staff across the St. Joseph's Healthcare System in simulation scenarios
Follow best practices in simulation to support learners, staff, and physicians in simulation techniques
Role model best practices in simulation pre-briefing, active simulation and debriefing
Teach a variety of courses and workshops
Supervision of High School Co-op Students
Plan and develop future-oriented, progressive services and resources in collaboration with clients
Assist with developing an information technology plan for support services
Establish and maintain professional relationships with learners, staff and physicians and with external stakeholders
Collaborate with the interprofessional simulation and clinical team across the system to determine opportunities for technology improvement and innovative ideas to enhance the realistic application of the scenarios
Participate in the creation of marketing materials
Attend regular meetings with management and staff
Participates in special projects or initiatives as required
Perform other duties as required to support education and clinical mandate
Collaborate with all system teams
