Position: Shipping and Equipment Maintenance Specialist (1 Year Contract)

37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday

Purpose of Position


This position plays a primary role in supporting the Training department while also providing backup support to the Research & Technology department by managing the shipping, receiving, packing, and maintenance of all training equipment. Additionally, this role assists in setting up and delivering select hands-on training courses for drinking water operators.


The position reports to the Manager of Training and receives guidance from staff within the Research & Technology Department.

Key Responsibilities



Shipping, Receiving, and Packing:

Handle the logistics of shipping, receiving, packing training and pilot equipment in a timely and efficient manner.

Liaison:

Is the main point of contact for training equipment with trainers across the province on shipping logistics and equipment condition.

Training Assistance:

Assist in the transportation, setup and delivery of select hands-on training courses, ensuring the equipment is prepared and operational.

Equipment Maintenance and Inventory:

Maintain an accurate inventory of training equipment and supplies. Conduct regular maintenance to ensure all equipment is functional, safe, and in good working condition. Assist with necessary repairs as needed.

Course Setup & Equipment Support:

Participate in the setup and maintenance of equipment and supplies for training sessions, pilot testing, and special events.

Procurement Assistance:

Support the procurement process for new equipment, ensuring proper tracking and documentation.

Travel Requirements:

Occasional travel (less than 30% of the time) may be required for onsite training delivery and equipment maintenance.

Other Duties:

Perform additional tasks as assigned by the position manager, contributing to the overall effectiveness and success of the team.

Knowledge, Education and Training


A minimum of a two-year college diploma or a university degree in a relevant field, such as Mechanical, Industrial, Electromechanical, or Environmental Engineering Technology, is required.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Teams and Outlook is required.



A valid class G driver's license (or equivalent), which is not expired, suspended, or forfeited, is required.



Transportation of Dangerous Goods certification will be required within the first 3 months of hire and must be taken and renewed as necessary.

Experience


A minimum of three (3) years of related work experience is required, with hands-on experience in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing mechanical or industrial equipment, particularly with equipment found in water treatment plants (pumps, valves, UV, etc.).

Strong research, organizational, and analytical skills are required for troubleshooting and repairing a wide range of equipment. Effective communications skills, both written and verbal, are also necessary.

An equivalent combination of education and experience would be considered.

Decision-making


This role requires decision-making skills in the maintenance, operation, and troubleshooting of various pieces of technology and equipment. The incumbent must be able to assess equipment issues, determine necessary repairs, and take appropriate actions to ensure timely and efficient operation.

Ingenuity and Creativity


The position will contribute ideas for improving procedures related to the storage, maintenance, shipping, and handling of training equipment. This includes streamlining processes and suggesting creative solutions to improve efficiency and minimize downtime, ensuring equipment is always ready and available for training sessions.

Impact of Action


The incumbent will have an indirect impact on the smooth operation of the department. Their actions will affect the timeliness, cost-efficiency, and quality of service provided, such as ensuring that the correct equipment is shipped on time, in good working order, and using the proper methods. In addition, this position is responsible for handling and shipping dangerous goods in compliance with all safety regulations.

Financial Responsibility


The incumbent will be responsible for following all accounting and procurement procedures when making purchases related to equipment and supplies. This includes ensuring that all purchases align with departmental budgets and that necessary documentation is accurately maintained.

Responsibility for Leadership


While this position does not have direct reports, the incumbent may show others how to do their job as needed.
The individual should be self-motivated, with the ability to meet schedule demands and work independently with minimal oversight.

Responsibility for Customer Relationships



This role contributes to the overall success of the team by working closely with the Centre's Training Operations staff, Research and Technology staff, and Trainers to ensure efficient operation and problem resolution.

Communication


This position requires regular internal communication with staff and, at times, product providers (i.e., OEMs), and contractors (e.g., electricians). Communication will take place using a variety of methods (e.g., phone, email, virtual meetings). Tact and courtesy are essential for exchanging technical information, ensuring clear understanding, and maintaining professional relationships.

Mental Effort


Periods of concentration and active listening will be required in this position. Often there is choice of action (e.g. choice of movement or switching tasks).

Physical Effort, Disruption and Working Conditions


The position may require standing for prolonged periods of time and performing work in awkward positions. The position requires lifting, pulling and pushing of heavy or awkward equipment and materials (up to 50 lbs.) and regular use of equipment and tools requiring some degree of skill.

The position typically works routine hours with general control over the pace of work. This position works primarily in an open shop environment and experiences normal interruptions by others or equipment distraction. At times, this position will be required to perform desk-based tasks (e.g., researching repair methods, or procuring equipment). The position involves some exposure to background noise and occasionally extreme temperatures and hazardous chemicals. Some disruption to lifestyle due to travel and work outside of normal working hours.

Responsibility for Confidential Information


This position will have some knowledge of confidential data when dealing with Centre clients (e.g., pilot testing, training - client names and employers). All employees are required, under the Oath or Affirmation of Office, to not disclose or give to any person any information or document that comes to their knowledge or possession in the course of employment.
