  • Ensure the efficient provision of laboratory services to meet patient care needs by reviewing workload, prioritizing requests and coordinating services with physicians, nurses, and other members of the health care team to maximize efficient use of resources.
  • Oversee the quality of work, makes recommendations for improvements regarding issues such as workflow, policies and procedures, and staffing requirements to Site Supervisor or designate. Participate in evaluating and implementing improvements, and attends meetings with technical and operational leads concerning laboratory activities.
  • Facilitate and report the resolution of issues such as incidents, staff performance, and equipment problems to the Site Supervisor or designate
  • Ensure that the Site Supervisor or designate is kept informed of all quality and safety issues. Implements DAP standards and recommendations and ensures staff compliance. Ensure staff safety incidents and investigation reports are completed as per WorkSafeBC Regulation and PHSA Workplace Health standards. Comply with safety responsibilities as outlined in the WorkSafeBC Regulation and Lower Mainland Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Safety Manual.
  • Determine related training needs and plans, organizes and conducts orientation for staff on evening/night/weekend shift as required. In collaboration with Site Supervisor or designate, conduct performance appraisals on assigned staff.
  • Supervise and coordinate technical activities for a laboratory area by performing duties such as setting daily priorities and advising on abnormal or questionable test results, troubleshooting work related issues and instrumentation/equipment. Participate in interview panels for staff selection.
  • Develop and maintain schedules for assigned staff in the evening/night/weekend shift; approve vacation, overtime and leave requests. Responsible for coordinating and planning laboratory staff and calling in and allocating staff as required
  • Ensure that quality system/risk management standards are maintained for work performed on the evening/night/weekend shift by monitoring and evaluating laboratory activities.
  • Perform the duties of a Medical Technologist 1 as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
What you bringQualifications
  • Certification with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
  • Graduation from a recognized program in Medical Laboratory Technology, plus three (3) years of recent, related experience in minimum one discipline on the shift, including one (1) year of supervisory experience and completion of courses in supervision and time management, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
