Wasauksing First Nation is accepting applications for a Shelter Custodian. The Shelter Custodian is a full-time, permanent position. Under the direct supervision of the Shelter Manager, this position is responsible for the daily cleaning and maintenance of the Wasauksing First Nation Safe Home.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
Maintains health and sanitation standards of the shelter building by utilizing checklists provided and amended by the Executive Director;
Performs daily cleaning of the shelter building, including living, bath, and laundry rooms; exterior porch areas; interior common areas such as the foyer, dining room, common room, etc.; and the staff work area, front desk area, staff bathroom, and staff offices;
Performs preventive building maintenance duties, caulks windows and doors, repairs and replaces broken locks and bunks; door knobs or locks, repairs door closures, patches holes in walls;
Keeps grounds for all community buildings outside clean: grass mowing/cutting during summer months, snow removal and salting of entrances to community buildings;
Monitors general condition of facilities and reports needs for major repairs to the Maintenance Co-ordinator. Foresees problems, prepares recommendations for addressing issues and estimates for cost;
Assembles and moves furniture, hangs pictures and bulletin boards, moves and sets up tables and chairs
Empties all recycling bins and trash receptacles;
Assists the Shelter Cook with the clean-up of meals as needed;
Assists in cleaning and preparing client bedrooms when clients exit;
Identifies minor maintenance issues and communicates them to the Executive Director;
Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies and materials used by clients, alerts;
Executive Director when supplies need to be restocked
Follows all Shelter service philosophies, policies, and procedures
Adhere to all policies and procedures of Wasauksing First Nation and any other relevant policies and procedures from external agencies and partners
Perform other duties within the scope of the position as assigned by the Manager or Supervisor
Education & Experience:
Ontario Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12), an asset;
Previous experience in janitorial, maintenance or related work, e.g. construction, machinery, an asset;
General knowledge of cleaning appliances, maintenance equipment, plumbing, an asset;
Ability to speak, read and understand Anishnaabemowin (Ojibway Language) is an asset;
Other Requirements:
Initiative to monitor and foresee problems before they become a crisis that could cause serious damage or require expensive repairs.
Valid Driver's License and reliable personal vehicle
Willing to work flexible hours as required, including evenings and weekends
This position requires the individual to work with various families, youth and children. To protect children, youth and vulnerable persons, Wasauksing First Nation requires the individual to provide a vulnerable sector. Or criminal record check
Training will be provided to the selected candidate.
