Summary of Role


Working under the direction of the Youth Team Lead, the Settlement Worker in Schools works as part of the MAGMA team who ensure our clients receive a comprehensive set of settlement and integration services. The SWIS' primary focus is ensuring school students' success in all aspects of their academic and school life.

CORE POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES


The duties of this role fall under three broad categories:

1. School Liaison


The Settlement Worker's role involves taking the lead in creating a partnership between MAGMA and the Anglophone East School District (ASD-E). This involves:Connecting with local schools and their newcomer support teams, such as the International Welcome Centre, to ensure a smooth flow as children enter the school system, including identifying gaps and potential solutions where relevant. Assisting with all district administration, such as the completion of enrolment and transfer documentation for the students. Acting as a liaison between parents and school administration/teachers, including organizing access to interpretation services where needed. Working with the schools to assist them in the creation and maintenance of staff and student committees that promote diversity and inclusion, with the goal of establishing committees in all regional schools. Promoting and delivering the MAGMA cross-cultural training program for students.

2. Student Support


The Settlement Worker's role also directly supports the students themselves. This involves:Meeting with the students and their parents to perform an initial assessment of their academic needs. Educating students and parents on all aspects of scholastic life, including the school processes and regulations, school bus systems, curricula, nutritional school lunches and snacks, dress codes and seasonal clothing, behaviour, and punctuality expectations etc. Regularly meeting with parents, students, and teachers throughout the academic year to assess progress, through either school or at-home visits as needed. Coordinating support for their schoolwork, including requesting volunteers and through the after-school Homework Hotspot program. Supporting the maintenance of their language and academic skills throughout the summer. Assisting in the transition to post-secondary education. Assessing at-risk in-school behaviors and ensuring support to address the issues. Connecting students to relevant support roles, including but not limited to:

o Youth Integration Coordinator to ensure they are successful in social integration.
o Life Skills Coordinators to ensure the parents and other family members continue with the support required.
o Youth Employment Counsellors as they transition from school to the workplace.
o MAGMA Crisis Counselor regarding issues affecting youth.

3. Reporting

Tracking appropriate data, compiling information and statistics as well as preparing reports.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS


The ideal candidate should possess the following:A university degree or equivalent education and/or experience in social work or a related human services field Experience providing counselling or support services, preferably in educational or community settings Experience working with youths and/or families from diverse backgrounds Ability to develop and deliver presentations and training workshops Ability to identify and engage with strategic stakeholders Proficient in MS Office and electronic record-keeping, with strong skills in maintaining accurate records and reports A valid driver's license and reliable transportation to travel to schools across Greater Moncton Flexibility to work outside regular hours when needed
