Course number and title: PHY2315HS - Advanced Statistical Mechanics - Sessional Instructor (0.5 FCE) - (Emergency Posting)

Course description: Collective modes, Importance of Symmetries and Dimensionality; Introduction to phase transitions and critical phenomena; Ginzburg-Landau theory, Mean-field theory, Critical Exponents; Goldstone modes and the lower critical dimension; Fluctuations and the upper critical dimension; Universality and self-similarity, Scaling hypothesis; Kadanoff's heuristic renormalization group and exponent identities; Perturbation theory, diagrammatic expansion; Wilson's momentum space renormalization group, epsilon expansion, Wilson-Fisher fixed point.

Estimated course enrolment: 15 students

Estimated TA support: TBA hours (contingent upon enrolment)

Class schedule (Lectures): Friday 11:00am-1:00pm

The delivery method for this course is currently in-person. Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the Faculty or the Department.

Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2023 - April 30, 2023

Salary:

Pay for half course, vacation pay included:

Sessional Lecturer I: $8,489.67
Sessional Lecturer I Long Term: $8,869.25
Sessional Lecturer II: $9,085.58
Sessional Lecturer III: $9,301.90

Minimum qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics
  • At least 3 years research experience in the field of theoretical condensed matter physics
  • Familiarity with renormalization group theory and advanced paradigms of phase transitions
Description of duties:
  • Coordination of a graduate course
  • Preparation and delivery of lectures in this course
  • Supervision and training of teaching assistant(s) assigned to course, including overseeing the TAs DDAH forms
  • Preparation, supervision and grading of tests and examinations in accordance with University regulations; submission of final grades
  • Providing scheduled office hours for academic counseling of students
