INF2190H - Data Analytics: Introduction, Methods and Practical Approaches

Course Description: The influx of data that is created, gathered, stored and accessed has given birth to some new areas of data analysis. The terms \xe2\x80\x9cpredictive analytics\xe2\x80\x9d, \xe2\x80\x9cbig data\xe2\x80\x9d and \xe2\x80\x9cdata science\xe2\x80\x9d are prevalent in scientific as well as broad audience publications and often make part of new business opportunities. Understanding the significance of techniques that perform analytics and knowing how to interpret their results offers a unique advantage in the performance of information professionals within an organization.

This course (INF2190H - Data Analytics: Introduction, Methods and Practical Approaches) provides an introduction to the field of analytics, and therefore the extensive use of data, statistical and quantitative analysis, exploratory and predictive models to mine and discover unexpected but useful glimpses of previously unknown information. We discuss standard data mining algorithms that can be applied on both structured and unstructured data and experience their impact on decision making situations. The students will actively participate in the delivery of this course through case and project presentations.

Number of positions: 2 (2 sections)

Estimate of the course enrolment: 70

Estimate of TA Support: Estimate of 75 hours with enrolment of 36 or greater. Allocation of TA hours, if any, will be based on enrolment numbers.

Class Schedule: Both sections will be held Wednesdays; one will take place 12-3pm and the other 6-9pm. You are required to be located in geographical proximity to the applicable University premises in order to attend and perform your duties on University premises as of the Starting Date.

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2023 - December 31, 2023

Salary:

Sessional Lecturer I: $10,300

Sessional Lecturer I Long Term: $10,764

Sessional Lecturer II $11,021

Sessional Lecturer II Long Term: $11,227

Sessional Lecturer III: $11,279
Sessional Lecturer III Long Term: $11,485

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Qualifications: Preferably candidates will have a completed, or nearly completed, PhD degree in an area related to the course or a Master\'s degree plus extensive professional experience in an area related to the course. Teaching experience is preferred.

Brief description of duties: Preparing course materials; delivering course content (e.g., seminars, lectures, and labs); developing and administering course assignments, tests & exams; grading; holding regular office hours.
