Course Number and Title: STA2546HS: Data Science in Practice

Course Description: This course explores what are the various issues that arise when machine and statistical learning methods are used in practice on big data to inform business intelligence (in finance and insurance). In practice, data is not clean, number of features is large, feature engineering must be carried out, and data is often multi-modal consisting not only of structured data, but also of images, text, and social network data. In this course, students will be exposed to various techniques and practical know-how to deal with these cases and learn how to present results to practitioners who are not domain experts.

Estimated Course Enrolment: 31 students

Estimated TA Support: 25 hours. The availability of TA support is contingent on class enrolment and class size.

Class Schedule: Mondays 10:00am to 1:00pm (First Half)

Sessional Dates of Appointment: January 1, 2024 to April 30, 2024 (First Half 6 Lectures: 0.25 FCE)

Salary: $4,728.95 for Sessional Lecturer I
$4,965.40 for Sessional Lecturer I Long Term
$5,060.88 for Sessional Lecturer II

$5,163.31 for Sessional Lecturer II-Long Term
$5,181.38 for Sessional Lecturer III

$5,285.01 for Sessional Lecturer III- Long Term

Qualifications: : : Relevant background and education in the field of Data Science. Currently active in the finance industry with at least five years\' experience in finance/insurance. Prior experience teaching at the university level. Prior experience teaching this, or similar course at university level is an asset. Note: Applicants may be asked to supply references.

Description of Duties: Preparation and delivery of lectures in this course. Preparation, supervision and grading of assignments, tests, and final examinations in accordance with university regulations; reporting final grades; counseling students; supervising teaching assistant(s).
