Sessional Lecturer
FSC311H5F - Forensic Chemistry
NOTE: THis course is to be co-taught with another sessional lecturer.
Course Description: This course focuses on the analysis of physical evidence based on the principles of analytical chemistry. Students will gain knowledge in the theory and operation of forensically relevant chemical and instrumental techniques used for the analysis of evidentiary items, including drug/alcohol analysis, gunshot residue, explosives, paint analysis, etc. Students will also develop skills relating to the interpretation, limitation, and implications of analytical results in a forensic context.
Session: September 1, 2024 - December 31, 2024
Lecture: Thursday 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM (In-person)
Practicals/Tutorials: Tuesdays 10:00 am-1:00 pm, and 2:00-5:00 pm
Estimated Course Enrolment: 32
Estimated TA support: 140 hours (total number of assigned hours is dependent on course enrolment and course approvals)
Salary:

• $4,726.45 for Sessional Lecturer I
• $4,965.40 for Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term
• $5,060.89 for Sessional Lecturer II
• $5,181.38 for Sessional Lecturer III

This course is to be co-taigh, and is therefore weighed at 0.25 FCE.

Qualifications: A PhD (completed or ABD with active student status at issuing institution) in Chemistry or closely related field, or at minimum an Honours Bachelor of Science with 5-10 years experience in a forensic chemistry/toxicology lab, or a Masters degree in Chemistry and activiely working in a forensic science laboratory. Extensive experience in the field of Forensic Chemistry or equivalent; and experience teaching chemistry courses. We are seeking candidates with teaching excellence and mastery of the subject area.
Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a forensic science background, scientific research, and casework experience. Experience acting as an expert witness in a Canadian court of law is highly desirable. We are seeking candidates with teaching excellence and mastery of the subject area. Experience with management and delivery of courses using University of Toronto or similar systems (e.g., Quercus, Canvas-based technologies, Zoom, etc.) is preferred.
Duties: Preparation and delivery of course material, preparation and delivery of assignments, tests and/or exams, as well as practicals; supervision of teaching assistants (includes providing instruction on how to mark, as well as holding office hours); marking of students work (during the term and beyond if an extension of time is granted by the university officials); submission of grades to university officials; and holding regular office hours. The mode of instruction for this course is expected to be in-person. However, if this changes for any reason, you will be provided with as much advance notice as practicable.
