Course description: With a focus on teacher preparation, this course seeks to understand the experiences of Indigenous people in Canada with regard to racism and settler colonialism, focusing on implications for classroom-based, programmatic, and pedagogical practice and reform. Because schooling has a historical and contemporary role in facilitating racism and settler colonialism, especially through the creation of residential schools, this course encourages teachers to become familiar with the consequences of this ongoing history, and to learn strategies to rethink relationships between schools and Indigenous learners and communities.

As of September 1, 2025, the minimum stipend is $9,820.70 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a half credit course.

Minimum Qualifications

: Candidates should possess a doctoral degree or other graduate degree and relevant teacher experiences in K-12 settings in a relevant discipline as well as demonstrated currency and mastery of the subject area. Mastery may be demonstrated, but not limited to scholarly publications establishing expertise in the area. Demonstrated knowledge and practice of equity, diversity and inclusion required.

Description of duties

: This course is offered as a required course in the MT program. The instructor is expected to prepare, organize, and teach this course, be available to students seeking assistance, and manage deadlines for reporting, evaluating and providing timely feedback to students and submitting final grades. The instructor is also expected to consult with the course lead as required.
