Yellowknife Women\xe2\x80\x99s Society SERVICE COORDINATOR \xe2\x80\x93 HOUSING FIRST Identification Department Position Reports To Housing First Housing Lead \xe2\x80\x93 Housing First Hours of Work Status 37.50 hours Permanent Full-Time Purpose of the Position Service Coordinators are front-line members of the Yellowknife Housing First team. Under the supervision of the Team Lead, Service Coordinators provide and coordinate services for Housing First tenants in a flexible, compassionate, and responsible manner. Scope The Yellowknife Housing First Program supports chronically homeless adult individuals to access, maintain and retain private market housing, providing a number of supports to assist participants to transition into housing and access the services they need. Reporting to the Team Lead, the Service Coordinator is an integral member of the day-to- day operationalization of Housing First programs by assisting with program delivery and providing direct support to clients. The position is based in Yellowknife, NWT. Responsibilities

  • Reviews client intake and collaborates with clients to create a comprehensive client-centered service plan.
  • Provides case management and advocacy to tenants and coordinates and monitor referrals to community services and tenant participation.
  • Maintains written and computerized records, compiles reports and completes other program documentation.
  • Assists clients to manage their finances, including preparing budgets, accessing Income Support, and assisting in preparing tax and other financial documents.
  • Educates, informs, and advocates for clients regarding benefits and entitlements (e.g., disability supports, survivor benefits).
  • Organizes and participates in social activities with tenants in the community.
  • Assists clients to prepare for and find employment, if desired.
  • Provides clients with education regarding their consumer rights, including grievance procedures with Yellowknife Housing First, and support to pursue any grievances.
  • Assists in bridging any gaps between tenants and community service providers.
  • Facilitates educational and support groups, as needed.
  • Participates in on-call rotation.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • A solid knowledge and understanding of harm reduction as a philosophy and practice; an understanding of social determinants of health and social justice issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal communications skills, including conflict management skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, as well as computer literacy in Word and Excel.
  • Ability to discuss sensitive topics effectively, and to handle disagreements in a way that leads to acceptable compromises and avoids power struggles or confrontations.
  • Ability to work independently, to cope with crisis situations, and to work flexible hours in a changing environment.
  • Have a flexible, positive, team-based, and solution-oriented approach to work.
Typically, the above qualifications would be obtained by:
  • Previous experience working with individuals with histories of substance abuse, mental health issues and/or trauma; experience working with homeless individuals preferred.
  • A degree in social work or related degree (e.g., psychology, occupational therapy) preferred.
  • An awareness of the history of colonialism and the legacy and impact of residential schools.
  • Valid NWT driver\xe2\x80\x99s license preferred.
