The Senior Web Developer will lead the university\xe2\x80\x99s public-facing web team, oversee our content management system, build and maintain public web sites and keep our sites optimized and secure. Reporting to the Marketing Director, Marketing & Communications, the Senior Web Developer is responsible for strategic planning, developing and maintaining of the public web services for OCAD University (OCAD U), including the institutional website(s), special projects, and web infrastructure and for the analysis, design, development and deployment of web, mobile, and online applications as mandated by Marketing & Communications (M&C). The Senior Web Developer supervises the work of the web team and ensures compliance with industry standards, incorporation of leading web technologies, and a high degree of usability and accessibility in all online marketing and communications products.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Administer, monitor and manage the University website(s)\xe2\x80\x99 Content Management Systems (CMS), ensuring uptime, stability and system security
  • Monitor and maintain all websites and online applications on the public production/development servers, including operating systems
  • Oversee and support the web team in developing and maintaining web content, special projects, and system health
  • Support the Marketing Director, Marketing & Communications in monitoring the public OCAD U web budget across services, vendors and student monitors/interns
  • Transform business requirements and conceptual system designs into detailed functional specifications
  • in accordance with design and information management standards
  • Strategic development and maintenance of online applications (e.g. dynamic, web-based, interactive,
  • data-driven content management systems, such as Drupal) by employing relevant and leading mobile-first web technologies in application and database web development, including but not limited to: PHP; SQL; HTML5/CCS/JavaScript and JSON and DevOps (i.e. GitLab and Pantheon\xe2\x80\x99s cloud-based infrastructure)
  • Program and design digital projects for optimal interaction and user experience, leveraging current and projected web technology trends, and data/information visualization practices aligned with university business goals working against core university business goals
  • Ensure accessibility and W3C, WCAG, WAI, and AODA standards compliance and cross-platform
  • compatibility for client-side browsing tools, including mobile devices
  • Oversee online strategy for accessibility, standards compliance, usability and system design
  • Act as principal technical liaison and project manager between Marketing & Communications
  • and Information Technology (IT) Services on matters pertaining to the public website\xe2\x80\x99s production/development platforms
  • Identify system deficiencies and opportunities in consultation with IT Services and multiple stakeholder groups, and help establish and adhere to coding, development standards, training practices and strategic institution priorities
  • Provide technical support to other departments in achieving their online communications goals
  • Oversee the implementation, monitoring and maintenance of OCAD U web/digital analytics, including synthesizing data to lead and plan strategy for growth of web services
  • Increase institutional online exposure by employing innovative Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques
  • across sites, applications and content management systems
  • Assist the Executive Director, Marketing & Communications, in achieving M&C and institution wide goals, special projects and other related duties
Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary degree or equivalent, with a minimum four (4) years of advanced experience in web programming, website management and online technologies
  • Experience mentoring a web development and design team
  • Demonstrated understanding of marketing and how to use websites as marketing tools to achieve objectives
  • Extensive, in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge in web applications frameworks, W3C and other industry- approved development standards
  • Proficiency in HTML5, CSS3 and AJAX/JavaScript (client side and server side), XML, XSLT, GIT/SVN
  • Demonstrated experience in scripting languages and frameworks particularly PHP, Shell and Node.JS
  • Superior ability and fluency in Drupal and other open source CMS and web application development frameworks
  • Expert knowledge of web development with Drupal, including advanced experience with REST API/API-First framework development and implementation
  • Demonstrated experience with SQL and database systems such as MySQL, MSSQL and SQL Server
  • Strong familiarity with Adobe development and design tools
  • Strong familiarity with web security/certificates and application development best practices
  • Familiarity with digital-media technologies such as streaming servers, formats and protocols
  • Familiarity with command line scripting on Linux platforms (Ubuntu Linux, Gentoo Linux, macOSX)
  • Proven understanding of website server architecture, redundancy and administrative policies for uptime,
  • security and long-term health
  • Familiarity with learning and course management systems an asset
  • Demonstrated experience with information architecture and data visualization
  • Strong experience with application-development processes as a member of a marketing and communications team, focusing on strategic communication
  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, analytical and problem-solving skills including robust root/cause analysis
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, with ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity and equity, and experience promoting a respectful work and learning environment for students, staff and faculty
Compensation: OPSEU Unit I, Appendix B, Grade B3; $73,404.82 to $96,473.69 per annum

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, for a total of 35 hours per week.
