Candidate Specification

The ideal candidate will possess the following core competencies and experience:

  • 10+ years of experience in urban design, with demonstrated application to Transit Oriented Communities (TOC) or transit infrastructure
  • Relevant education and qualifications in urban design, architecture, urban planning or a related field is essential
  • Ability to achieve one or more professional designations, such as Architect OAA or Registered Professional Planner (RPP)
  • Competencies in Urban Design, masterplanning, project management, stakeholder engagement, community consultation, technical writing.
  • Experience with architectural and engineering design, land use planning, development, construction processes, and real estate
  • Experience with transportation and/or infrastructure projects
  • An appreciation for the principles, methods and practices of public administration including purchasing, contracting, budgeting and maintaining public records
  • Basic knowledge of planning and real estate development funding resources, including those for affordable housing and public improvements
  • Must be able to read and interpret maps, engineering drawings, and sketches
  • Experience analyzing technical data and legal requirements
  • Strong written and oral communication skills including the communication of complex technical information to non-technical audiences
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Demonstrable background of working both independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team
  • A history of achieving milestones and meeting deadlines
The ideal candidate may possess the following additional assets:
  • Competency in nature-based design, human factors and accessibility, urban safety and security and demographic and social analysis
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and inclination toward developing transit-oriented development based opportunities for the business.


Mott MacDonald\'s Urban Planning & Mobility Practice supports our business across Canada with expertise in transportation planning, modelling and policy development, urban development and master planning, strategic planning and environmental planning & approvals. Our projects include transportation operations, change management, and infrastructure design. Our Canadian offices are in Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary.

In addition to both leading and supporting projects in Canada, we support the delivery of projects for Mott MacDonald\'s clients across the US and globally.

We are currently seeking a Senior Urban Designer to join our team in Toronto office. This candidate will lead urban design elements of transit-oriented development, urban master plans and transit infrastructure projects.

Duties will include:
  • Work with client, Project Management Team and Discipline Leads to deliver urban design and transit-oriented community scope
  • Proactively work with clients, 3rd parties, partners and subconsultants to identify opportunities and mitigate challenges to contribute to successful transit-oriented communities
  • Provide advice and expertise on managing interface between disciplines and infrastructure elements
  • Liaise with Mott MacDonald colleagues across North America and the globe to ensure best practices are brought to our Canadian clients including but not limited to
  • Design, advisory, business casing and benefits management, digital delivery and program management
  • Collaborate with Portfolio Leads and Account Leads to identify business growth opportunities in the Canadian market
  • Provide inputs to overall project budgets and schedules
