We are looking for a Senior Safety Coordinator to support the business by ensuring that the operation and its employees are working safely and in compliance with legal and other requirements through the provision of quality services and advice to the Labrador City operation. The role is based in Labrador City, NL.
Reporting to the Superintendent Safety & Hygiene, the Senior Safety Coordinator is responsible for leading a team that will be providing support, advice and coaching to the Labrador City operation on implementation of the Rio Tinto Safety Standards, incident management and associated legal and other requirements. Both within IOC and Rio Tinto the role plays an important part in ensuring a safe workplace is fostered and that the business meets both Rio Tinto and legislative needs.
To enable this to occur, the role is required to lead a team that will coach and support the operational areas, assist with incident management, and implement safety initiatives to continuously improve performance.
Reporting to the Superintendent and working in an exciting and unique environment within the Iron Ore Company of Canada, you will be:
Safety Leadership and Awareness: Lead continuous improvement of safety performance, promote safety awareness, and ensure compliance with safety systems and regulations.
Support and Compliance: Provide advice and support to team members, ensuring activities comply with Rio Tintos safety systems, Provincial, and Federal regulations.
Safety Investigations and Reporting: Assist with safety investigations, coach on report preparation, and implement corrective actions. Monitor and report on safety performance indicators.
Risk Management and Compliance: Understand and adhere to the HSEQ Management System, Rio Tinto standards, and legislative provisions. Demonstrate understanding of risk assessment processes and hazard controls.
Safety Planning and Implementation: Assist in developing and implementing the Safety Plan, update safety policies and procedures, and participate in safety planning for operations and projects.
Audits and Communication: Participate in HSE audits and government tours. Communicate regularly with the H&S team and stakeholders on safety performance and improvement initiatives.
Collaboration and Networking: Develop and maintain effective networks with internal and external stakeholders. Ensure collaboration with operations, maintenance, and contractor teams.
Cost Management: Maintain cost awareness and identify opportunities to reduce costs to the business.

What youll bring
A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
Tertiary qualification in a related field. (desired)
Extensive related experience in an industrial environment.
Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation CRSP (desired)
Training in incident investigation and analysis (e.g., Taproot, Root Cause Analysis etc.) (desired)
Leadership Training (considered an asset)
Confidence and positivity, inspiring and motivating the team to achieve their best
Strong ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
