Job Description

FREDsense Technologies is hiring! We are a Calgary-based water instrumentation company specializing in creating portable units for doing water chemistry analysis in the field. FREDsense manufactures easy-to-use units that allow accurate and rapid detection of various contaminants. We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, full-time, in-person Senior Research Scientist to join our team working on designing and optimizing environmental sensors.

The Role



This is a hands-on, in-the-lab role for someone who is passionate about experimental work and takes initiative to solve problems. The successful candidate will be detail oriented with strong experimental and analytical skills in the fields of analytical, environmental, and/or biological chemistry. They will be responsible for designing, executing, and leading complex scientific projects from conception to completion. This role involves significant contribution to the strategic direction of research, mentorship of junior scientists, and the application of advanced scientific principles to solve challenges and drive innovation. The Senior Scientist will be instrumental in generating new hypotheses, developing novel methodologies, interpreting complex data, and effectively communicating findings to internal and external stakeholders. Once oriented to the work environment, the candidate should be able to assume the following responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities



Research Leadership:



Taking responsibility and ownership for completion and reporting progress on team goals that are assigned by the project manager Staying informed of the latest scientific literature, technological advancements, and industry trends to inform research directions Using data collected by the FREDsense team as well as relevant scientific literature to inform the research direction. This includes researching industry standard approaches and, when necessary, coming up with innovative ideas to solve high priority research problems Contributing significantly to the design of research strategies, project roadmaps, and intellectual property

Mentorship and Management:



Coordinating research teams including research scientists, assistants and students by providing direction and task management Planning experiments for their research team, clearly communicating the scope and rationale of the experiments and expectations for the research scientists to perform experiments and report outcomes Demonstrate methods and analysis process, quality and expectations to the team

Experimental Planning:



Independently and collaboratively design, plan, and execute experiments, ensuring scientific rigor Making key decisions on research methodologies and approaches Leading troubleshooting efforts for complex challenges Implementing and maintaining high standards of laboratory practice and data integrity Analyzing & interpreting data for quarterly reporting periods and determining next steps for experimental work

Communication:



Summarizing work completed to report to management and leadership teams Contributing to the preparation of scientific publications, patent applications, and grant proposals upon request of management and project managers Representing the company at scientific conferences through presentations and poster sessions Covering the responsibilities of project manager when required Maintaining meticulous records of experiments, data, and findings and ensuring documentation of the team is up to date and complete. This includes your own experiments and monitoring the progress of the team. Mentoring more junior team members on experimental design, data analysis & best lab practices

Required Skills, Experience, and Qualities



Education:

An MSc or PhD in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline from an accredited institution.

Experience:

A minimum of 5 years of post-degree research experience in an industrial research and development setting, demonstrating a track record of scientific accomplishment.
