About the role

Orica Canada Inc. is seeking an experienced Process Safety Engineer to join our Technical Team, reporting to the site Technical Manager. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and improving the Process Safety Management (PSM) program for our Nitric Acid and Ammonium Nitrate plants located in Carseland, Alberta, Canada, located near Calgary. This role requires a strong background and passion for process safety and risk management. The ideal candidate will have expertise in developing and improving PSM at a Chemical, Petrochemical, or Oil & Gas facility, conducting risk assessments and providing advice to Operations, Maintenance, Technical and Projects departments.

What you will be doing

  • Develop and maintain the Process Safety Management program for the Nitric Acid and Ammonium Nitrate manufacturing plants
  • Provide Assurance and Governance on the various PSM elements with direct ownership of Process Safety Information Management, Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA), Management of Change (MOC) and Pre-startup Safety Review\'s (PSSR)
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant PSM regulatory and company standards. Staying updated on all changes and updating site standards accordingly.
  • Track and analyze site PSM KPIs to ensure on-time reporting and useful insights are identified and actioned on time
  • Coordinate Process Hazard Analyses (PHA\'s), Layer of Protection Analyses (LOPA\'s) and other Process Safety related Risks Assessments
  • Track and manage corrective actions stemming from PHAs, LOPAs, and Investigations
  • Manage the site Overpressure Protection (OPP) Program, including Engineering analyses
  • Mentor and coach site leadership and personnel on PSM matters through daily interactions and formal training
  • Provide guidance and support to plant personnel on process safety matters
  • Guide and support small and large capital projects to ensure effective implementation of PSM principles in regards to design and operability
  • Participate in and lead Investigations related to PSM
  • Participate in regulatory and internal audits
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including production, engineering, maintenance, and management, to identify opportunities for process safety improvements and ensure the safe operation of the plant.
What you will bring
  • Bachelor\'s degree in Chemical Engineering
  • Registered, or eligible to register as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with APEGA
  • 13+ years of experience in process safety management in a chemical, petrochemical or oil & gas plant
  • Working knowledge of process safety regulations and standards, including CSA Z767, OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, and other relevant regulations related to process safety management
  • Working knowledge of other Engineering standards (e.g. ASME, API, NFPA, etc.).
  • Experience in Overpressure Protection analyses and relevant standards (e.g. API520/521/2000/650/620, ASME sec VIII, ASME sec I, B31.3, B31.1, B16.5, AB-525) will be a strong asset
  • Competent in facilitating HAZOPs, LOPAs, What-if analyses, and PSSR
  • Strong knowledge of Management of Change processes and Pre-startup Safety Review
