Purpose

Safeguard the Bank from operational and reputational risks and be a relentless advocate for the safe, responsible growth of the mortgage business within Scotiabank\xe2\x80\x99s risk framework. The incumbent will provide counsel for Real Estate Secured Lending leadership to inform business decisions and support navigating the regulatory environment.
Key Accountabilities


  • Partner with and provide guidance to business line leadership and our mortgage sales channels to enable business growth while keeping the Bank safe.

  • Measure and monitor operational risks within the business and collaborate with business line leadership to enact mitigation strategies where necessary.

  • Responsible for overseeing the efficacy of controls and improving the control environment within Real Estate Secured Lending to mitigate risks and ensure adherence to policies and regulations (e.g., B20, Consumer Protection, Privacy, AML/KYC, SOX, FINTRAC, etc.)

  • Partner with governance functions to support control reviews and remediate issues on-time, as raised by internal partners (internal audit, compliance, global testing teams).

  • Partner with Compliance and be the business line\xe2\x80\x99s point of contact for external regulatory bodies (OSFI, FCAC, KPMG Audit, provincial consumer protection agencies) to ensure timely, accurate updates and ontime issue remediation.

  • Partner with Canadian Banking Issues Management to raise, assess, develop remediation plans and track to closure all system, process and customer impacting issues across Real Estate Secured Lending.

  • Protect the Bank\xe2\x80\x99s interests by ensuring 28+ vendor contracts are in good standing and operating within Scotiabank\xe2\x80\x99s third-party risk management framework.

  • Partner with Legal to support investigation and resolution of issues exposing the business to legal risk.

  • Act as the planner for the business continuity and pandemic plans.

  • Designated anti-money laundering & compliance officer for Real Estate Secured Lending (RESL), ensuring the business is compliant with the Bank Act, Trust and Loan Companies Act, Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, and regulatory directives issued by OSFI, FCAC or the CBA.

  • Understand how the Bank\xe2\x80\x99s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

  • Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.

  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank\xe2\x80\x99s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy,
adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

  • Knowledge of end-to-end real estate secured lending process (application to underwriting to funding to servicing).

  • Understanding of Scotiabank\xe2\x80\x99s real estate secured lending strategy, key priorities and how they fit within the strategic agenda of the Canadian Banking division

  • Comprehensive understanding of key internal stakeholders the Bank\xe2\x80\x99s organizational structure and operating model

Education and Other Requirements

  • University degree and 5+ years of relevant work experience.


  • A law degree and/or legal background is an asset.

  • Sound judgement and expert critical thinking and financial acumen required

  • A proven team leader and people manager

  • Knowledge of the real estate secured lending business is an asset

  • Knowledge of Scotiabank\xe2\x80\x99s risk management framework is an asset
