Overview

WorkSafeBC\xe2\x80\x99s Law & Policy division is seeking a skilled commercial lawyer with at least seven years\xe2\x80\x99 call (with a preference for candidates with more experience) for the position of Senior Manager, Corporate/Commercial.

In this role, you\xe2\x80\x99ll report to the Director, Corporate & Commercial, and will have overall responsibility for leading the planning, development, and operations of the Corporate & Commercial department, and for providing legal advice, guidance and direction to WorkSafeBC executives, managers and staff in all divisions.

At WorkSafeBC, we offer a hybrid work model that combines the convenience of working remotely with the dynamism of working in one of our offices, based on the operational needs of the position.

In this role, you\xe2\x80\x99ll work primarily from your B.C. home and at least two days per week in our Richmond office.

What you\'ll do

You will be involved in a variety of commercial legal matters, based on client needs. Your responsibilities will include:

Senior leadership within the Corporate/Commercial team, including:

participating in departmental strategic planning;

leading assigned managers and staff to ensure high levels of service are achieved in meeting organizational and divisional priorities and objectives;

assigning work to managers and staff, setting performance goals and providing feedback, coaching and developmental planning to support and motivate managers and staff in exceeding expectations;

promoting a supportive and healthy work environment;

Acting as a senior legal advisor, carrying your own file load of diverse commercial legal matters for your internal business clients. This will include:

advising WorkSafeBC management during all phases of the procurement process, including provision of strategic legal advice on WorkSafeBC\xe2\x80\x99s exposure to liability for non-compliance with procurement and contract requirements, contract management and response to vendor complaints;

negotiating commercial agreements on behalf of WorkSafeBC with external parties and their legal counsel and advising on and participating in stakeholder engagement planning and activities related to service providers;

identifying and assessing actual and potential legal risks to WSBC, including liaising with WSBC management to ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, and advise on the consequences of non-compliance and options for mitigating identified risks;

ensuring compliance with applicable legislation in commercial contracts, including the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act

Being responsive to and working collaboratively with clients to provide legal solutions that meet WorkSafeBC\xe2\x80\x99s needs

Working with client groups to continuously improve service delivery, promoting a service-oriented approach in providing services to external and internal clients and leading managers and staff to identify, follow up, and respond to customers and clients needs and areas of concern, taking appropriate action to quickly resolve issues

Keeping your professional and technical skills sharp in order to provide high quality and timely legal services

We\xe2\x80\x99re looking for someone who:

  • Has a strong understanding of contract law and principles
  • Has strong commercial agreement drafting skills, including custom contract drafting
  • Their clients trust to provide legal advice that is not only right, but is practical, timely, and includes options for clients to achieve their desired outcome
  • Constantly strives to grow and develop as a lawyer, and takes pride in producing a quality legal product
  • Takes an outcome-oriented and problem-solving approach with clients and team members to resolve an issue
  • Can interact with management, peers, and clients in a confident, professional and objective manner
Your background and experience
  • A Law Degree (LLB or JD)
  • A member in good standing of The Law Society of British Columbia
  • A minimum of 10 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience (private practice or a combination of private practice and in-house) practicing in corporate/commercial law. Experience in procurement law is an asset but not required
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant area(s) of law and of the workers compensation system and relevant legislation are assets.
  • Strong and proven leadership, management and/or supervisory experience preferred.
