Job Description




We are looking for a Senior Law Clerk / Paralegal

You will be primarily responsible for managing a caseload of recovery matters for multiple provinces across the country. Other responsibilities will include handling Small Claims/Provincial Court defence litigation matters, general advice matters, subrogation matters, third party motions for production, subpoenas, summonses to witness, other motions and applications, and responding to internal and external inquiries related to a variety of legal documents received by Canada Life. You will independently manage the majority of your caseload, accessing supervising counsel on some issues, as required.

The successful candidate must enjoy recovery work and demonstrate superior writing skills, initiative and the ability to work independently and handle a challenging caseload. Substantive training and mentoring is involved.

What you will do:

  • Collections \xe2\x80\x93 (Our role is Plaintiff) - manage a caseload of pre-litigation and litigation collection and subrogation matters including providing guidance to business areas, drafting demand letters, negotiating resolutions and initiating and attending court hearings, as necessary. You will also contribute to the collections database, ensure all matters are always accurately represented in our matter management software (eCounsel), and follow all document management (MFiles) procedural and naming convention guidelines for your caseload.
  • Small Claims/Provincial Court Files \xe2\x80\x93 (Our role is Defendant) \xe2\x80\x93 manage a caseload of Small Claims/Provincial Court litigation files related to STD, LTD, dental, and other issues, drafting all documentation/pleadings/opinions, providing guidance to affected business areas, negotiating resolutions and initiating and attending court processes, as necessary. The same requirements apply for eCounsel and MFiles, as above.
  • Legal document handling \xe2\x80\x93 manage a variety of legal documents including third party Motions, Applications, and Summonses to Witness. You will provide guidance to business areas and work directly with court offices, outside counsel, and government offices as required to represent the Company\xe2\x80\x99s position.
What you will bring:
  • Post-secondary legal diploma or combination of education and relevant experience
  • Minimum 5 years civil litigation or collections experience
  • Ability to independently manage own workload with well-developed organizational and time management skills; the ability to handle changing and competing priorities and a challenging workload
  • A desire for recovery work
  • Superior communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to independently draft substantive written communications including opinions, pleadings, correspondence with opposing counsel, and reports to client
  • Strong technical skills (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Pro). Exposure to matter management and document management software would be an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment
  • Enrollment in or completion of insurance industry courses and client/product knowledge are assets.
